Almost everyone is guilty of not cleaning their makeup brushes as frequently as they should (I certainly am!) Dirty brushes harbour bacteria and can be a contributing factor to breakouts, which nobody wants! Cleaning your brushes shouldn’t take too long and some brushes might not need to be cleaned as often as others. For flawless makeup application, a clean brush is always a good start.It might seem like it could be a costly affair, especially if you have lots of brushes! But I’m here to let you know that it doesn’t have to be. So no more excuses, those brushes need to be cleaned eventually, so here is how to clean makeup brushes naturally!

What to use? If you’re after natural methods of brush cleaning then you’re in luck! There is an abundance of cleaners to use but here is just a few, so take your pick:

1. Standard bar soap

A bathroom staple in many peoples homes that is simply used to wash your hands or as a body soap, but have you thought about using it as a brush cleaner? A perfect cleaner due to its nourishing properties and you know its safe for the skin.

2. Liquid dish soap

Another product just lying around the house. Dish soap is perfect for getting those stubborn foundation stains out or clogged up gel liner on your brushes. Smells great too!

3. Organic baby shampoo

With bacteria killing benefits this does the trick to remove those tough makeup stains that cling on to brush bristles. Safe for babies so definitely safe for you!

How to clean your brushes using one of the above cleaners:

1. Wet your hand and using your chosen cleaner place some in the palm of your hand.

2. Swill your chosen brush in the palm of your hand in circular motions, also swill the opposite direction.

3. Rinse the brush under warm water and check if clean

if not repeat steps one and two until the water from the brush runs clear and you’re happy with how clean they are.

4. Once the brush is clean, rinse your hands and ensure all soap residue is washed from the brush.

5. Place the brush flat on an old towel or paper towel.

Air drying is best but if you have to then use a hairdryer on a low heat setting. Laying the brushes flat ensures they dry properly as opposed to standing them upright.

7. Squeeze any excess water from all of the brushes at the end.

8. If there is a particularly warm spot, such as a window sill

then place the brushes on the towel there. Remember to wait until they are completely dry before use!
