How To Contour And Highlight Like A Kardashian
Unless you have been living under a rock you will know contouring is one of the biggest makeup crazes, which may not officially have its origins with the Kardashians but they have put it on the wider map, with more and more people becoming contour queens. However, there may be some people that do not have the first clue about how to contour, so here is a simple step by step guide on how to contour and highlight like a Kardashian.
Step 1: The Primer
For more of a natural contour look you can just opt for moisturiser or if you want a more flawless look you can always use foundation before contouring. You could opt for a moisturiser or foundation or another option is a tinted primer like Bare Minerals’ Prime time Primer which works as a skin perfecter, moisturiser and foundation combined, and also caters to your skin colour.
Step 2: The Contour
Before beginning your contour routine use a matte highlighter to brighten areas you want to conceal, which will be different for everyone, although usually you should highlight under eyes, nose, forehead and chin. Morphe’s Define Me Highlighter pencil is great for mapping out the contour and enhancing the features before contouring.
Step 3: Staying Symmetrical
Beginning with a lighter contour, starting by slimming down the nose, if you wish as contouring is all about what is right for your own face. If you wish to do this then you simply draw two symmetrical lines down each side of your nose. The NYX Professional Makeup Wonder stick is great for creating this look, and is much more accessible and affordable.
Step 4: The 3-Shape
Use a darker contour to highlight cheekbones and edges of the face using Kim Kardashian’s method of the 3-shape with the starting point at the forehead and drawing a 3 down the cheekbones and along jawline on each side of the face. You can use the darker colour on the NYX Professional Makeup Wonder Stick to create this look easily, as well as making more room in your makeup bag.
Step 5: Blending
Blending can begin by using a kabuki brush or similar to Blend the product in circular motions all around the face. Then proceed to use a dampened sponge to blend contour completely and also blend with fingers. Then use excess product and blend all over face to create overall coverage. The Real Techniques retractable Kabuki brush is perfect for blending and applying makeup evenly to give you that flawless Kardashian look. This is another vital part of knowing how to contour and highlight correctly.
Step 6: The Little Touches: Lips
Once the face is blended, use a light contour, doubling it up as a light lip liner to create a fuller lip and blend for a nude coloured lipstick.
Step 7: The Little Touches: Eyes
If you want to add some natural colour to the eyes use a darker contour as eye shadow giving a bronzey eye look.
Step 8 : Definition
To define your features use a shimmery highlighter on the bridge of the nose and the cupids bow (The curve on your top lip), the corner of the eyes, water line, eyebrow line, and cheekbones. You can also add some contour to your body by adding the highlighter to the collarbone and shoulders. The No7 Instant Radiance Highlighter is great for defining and highlighting whilst enhancing the contoured areas.
Step 9: Finishing Touches
To finish the natural contour look use a powder brush with some translucent powder if you feel your face is too shiny, and add some medium contour to the cheeks using either your fingers or an angled brush to warm up the cheeks. Laura Mercier’s Secret Brightening Powder is perfect for finishing off a flawless look.
Step 10: Highlight Highlight Highlight
If you are a highlight addict be careful not to go overboard with a more natural look but don’t be afraid to add a little bit more highlight to any prominent features especially cheekbones in order to create the Kardashian cheekbones from the Gods. This is one of the most important steps when learning how to contour and highlight.
