2021 Trends and Challenges for Fashion Designers

Source

Fashion designing is one industry that has consistently evolved ever since people learned the importance of having a fashion sense. From bell bottoms to cargo pants, strappy heels to knee-length boots, tank tops to neon shirts, after college, fast fashion has been a growing industry for people embracing it. Having your favorite celebrities don these outfits and endorse popular brands has been an ongoing fashion industry trend that has lured in customers all over the world.

According to current statistics, the fashion industry, or as Statista says, the global apparel market is estimated to grow in value from 1.3 trillion US dollars in 2015 to 1.5 trillion US dollars in 2020. These figures clearly represent the consistent growth of the industry and, in turn, suggest the growing trends and challenges for fashion designers. After all, they are the real pioneers of the industry who lead those figures from the front.

2020 Trends for Fashion Designers

Here are the top three fashion trends that you can surely expect to make waves around in 2020. Not only the top fashion designer brands will be seen incorporating these in their collections, but the younger generation would be seen donning these in their everyday lifestyle.

1.     Back to Leather Jackets and Denim

What a time to be alive where you see the after college pictures of your parents wearing leather jackets and denim jeans, and you are probably wearing the same. Yes, leather jackets and more precisely, leather bomber jackets are back in fashion. And back with a bang that is because from your favorite influencer celebrities to your neighborhood friend, everybody owns a pair and can be seen wearing it out in the streets and even for occasions and parties alike.

2.     Sustainable Clothing

According to a report published last year by a nonprofit organization called Global Fashion Agenda estimated that 75% of all the consumers view sustainability as a crucial factor when it comes to purchasing clothes. In an ever-growing industry where every trend lasts a given period before being forgotten or revived after almost a decade for the new generation, these figures show that sustainability is a trend to stay. Not going away anytime soon or even for the next upcoming decade, the newer generation is well aware of the benefits that pertain to having sustainable after college clothing.

3.     Power Suits

Are you having an after college graduation ceremony? Worry not because power suits are to your rescue. A good pair of sneakers to go with a brightly colored, tailored to perfection and fit for your body power suit is now the go-to attire for many powerful influencers. From female talk show hosts like Lilly Singh to high-fashion models like Kendall Jenner, and the men alike, a power suit would suit every vibe. A trend to catch up for many fashion designers as more ladies can be seen donning the attire, which is traditionally a male look.

2021 Challenges for Fashion Designers

Therefore, here we have compiled the top three challenges that the fashion designers will face while they struggle to steer the weight of this vast industry on their creative shoulders.

1.     China as a Growing Fashion Industry

According to Daxue Consulting, the fashion industry in China is expected to triple its amount of 2019, rising to an estimated USD 200 billion by the end of 2020. These estimates make it evident that China will continue to be an open opportunity for every fashion designer out there to explore their career. Many fashion students after college can try entering the market domain by joining companies that operate through the Chinese mega markets. However, the focal point here is that the Chinese giant is proving to be more complex and versatile for multinationals compared to other country leaders like Italy and France. Thus, the companies that heavily depend on the Chinese market or are aspiring to enter it should look for another growth potential too.

2.     After College Consumers – A New Generation

The major fashion challenge that fashion designers are facing these days is attracting the new after college, mid-20s generation. Gen Z has proven to be harsher of a critique than Millennials who are still more open to accepting ongoing trends and readily donning clothes. The newer generation is more fashion-forward with better awareness as to what suits their needs as well as looks good on them. Today, many of the fashion trends are being dictated to attract younger consumers. Brands are hiring fashion designers that understand the current demand and can easily integrate the ever-changing demands of the younger lot with their designs without compromising the brand’s authenticity.

3.     Brand Consciousness and Fast Fashion

A recent study report by Thred Up showed results about the average number of clothing items an American woman owns in her closet. It shows a drop in the past three years from 164 articles in 2017 to 136 pieces by the end of 201. This dynamic change in figures clearly shows that brand consciousness has started to make people more aware. Consumers can easily drive positive changes in the fashion industry by killing the urge to buy fast fashion and buying fewer new items after they get rid of the older ones only when they are completely worn out. The challenge faced by fashion designers is to offer more appealing, after college apparel that is both durable and complies with all future fashion needs. Of course, nobody would want to wear outdated stuff, but people would want to find a balance that offers the best of both worlds: fashionable yet durable clothing.

In Conclusion;

After college fast fashion industry is never stopping, as much as people are more aware of owning clothes for longer periods, brands are evolving to come out with durable fashion choices that last longer. People understand that having more durable clothes as compared to fast fashion is a profitable situation to be in, and you can still keep up your high-fashion attire all the while you are economical and environment-friendly.
