Tips to Avoid Dry Skin this Winter

As it becomes colder, it’s important to adjust your skin routine to fit the changes of the weather. No one likes having dry, rough skin during the cold months, so here’s 5 things you should do you avoid dry skin this winter.

1. Exfoliate

It’s always good to exfoliate your body every time you shower to achieve smooth, healthy skin for the colder months. There’s a couple of exfoliators and body scrubs in the drugstore that you can purchase, when you don’t want to spend the big bucks in Sephora or any other high end stores. Since I have very dry skin, I use Softsoap Body Butter Coconut Scrub Body Buff Wash. It exfoliates dead skin and has jojoba /coconut oil to nourish and keep my skin smooth. It also smells like coconuts, which is a plus for me. If you don’t like the smell of coconut, try the Caress Evenly Gorgeous Exfoliating Body Wash, which has a musky amber scent with vanilla. It feels like lotion but does a great job in removing dead skin cells and keeping skin hydrated.

2. Drink Water!

Yes, drinking water is one of the healthiest tricks to keep your skin hydrated throughout the fall and winter months. I always carry a huge bottle of water with me everywhere, so I won’t forget to drink water. It’s actually good to drink water right after you wake up and before you eat because it kick starts your metabolism! If you don’t like to drink water, you can add fruits like strawberries, kiwi, lemon or lime to add some flavor.

3. Apply Lotion Daily

It’s always good to apply lotion every day to keep your skin moisturized. Since I have drier skin in the winter, I usually lather myself with tons of lotion at night after I shower. One of the things I love to do is to apply lotion all over my feet, then put plastic wrap or a plastic bag over them to keep the moisture inside, and top it all off with a pair of socks. It really leaves my feet moisturized and soft in the morning. I use Vaseline Intensive Care Essential Healing lotion because it thoroughly moisturizes my dry skin while leaving it looking healthy.

4. Oil Treatment

Oil treatments are also great in keeping your skin smooth and healthy. There are a lot of different oils to choose from. You can use coconut oil, almond oil, argan oil or avocado oil. I recommend avocado oil for those with dry skin since it’s a little thicker in texture. I typically do oil treatments at night because it allows time for the oil to soak into my skin while I sleep, and my skin stays moisturized throughout the next day.

5. Use Sulfate Free Products

Using body wash and facial cleansers that have sulfates could really strip down your skin’s natural oils leaving your skin dry. Sulfate free products allow you to comfortably cleanse your skin while maintaining moisture. I really recommend Dove facial and body products since they are sulfate free, have a light scent and a creamy texture that keeps your body and face hydrated all day.
