The student body at the University of Alabama is really in a league all its own. From having the bragging rights for 16 national football championships, a huge Greek life community, and its legendary party scene, students at Alabama have a lot to talk about. With all the things UA students love to mention when Alabama comes up, here’s a few things you’ll never catch a University of Alabama student saying.
If there’s one thing that students at Alabama take seriously, it’s our rivalry with Auburn. Saying, “War Eagle!” is like saying, “Voldemort” at Hogwarts – just don’t do it.
We ALL wish Saban would jump into our arms for a hug like he did AJ McCarron. That man is a football coaching legend and deserves to be treated as such. On game days, you’ll find people wearing Nick Saban’s face on buttons or discussing how he’s the greatest coach of all time. If you think he’s overrated, you probably don’t go to Alabama and you probably wish Saban was your school’s coach.
If you decline an offer to head to Harry’s for T-shirt Tuesday, your friends may ask you if you’re not feeling well. Karaoke, pool tables, and cheap drinks are a MUST when it feels like it’s been a long week, but it’s only Tuesday.
If you’re in the 2018 or earlier graduating class, you probably got to hear this classic during home games. Unfortunately, the university decided against playing it in the stadium after students got pretty crude at the 2014 Iron Bowl. Though it isn’t played at games, you’ll often hear it throughout the school year at bars and fraternity parties with all the added in lyrics.
If you’re a student in the C&IS college or have ever had to take a communications class, you know that getting around this building takes some practice. With hallways that seem to have huge gaps in classroom numbers and multiple floors, this building can get kind of tricky – especially for first timers. Luckily, the college has ambassadors that are there the first few days of classes each semester to point you in the right direction.
Whether you spent your Thursday night at a swap, Rounders for Pre-Friday, or have just had a long week, your Friday 8 am will always be your most hated enemy. No amount of caffeine or weird hangover cures will make you prepared to sit through an early morning lecture when all you can think about is the weekend.
Tuscaloosa’s resident country band seems to be playing somewhere around town every weekend. They perform at bars, fraternity band parties, and date parties all year long. You can’t avoid seeing these guys more than once during your college career. Though they tend to be a good time, and have a great (yet tired) set, nobody ever goes out only to see Trotline in a dingy fraternity band room. I will say though, they never fail to play Dixieland Delight, which as you know, is always a crowd favorite.
In the fall, there’s home football games or watching parties. During spring semester, you can find yourself darty-hopping all afternoon. When there’s Alabama football going on everybody knows what their fall Saturdays will consist of. When it’s darty season in Tuscaloosa, you’ll find pretty much everybody on fraternity row. Usually, there’s good music, crawfish, and puppies at darties so it’s pretty hard to not have a good time.
You get $325 to use as dining dollars each semester. These work at all the restaurants in The Ferg like Chick-fil-a and Panda Express as well as at Buffalo Phil’s or when ordering Domino’s. As a first semester freshmen, it’ll seem like you have endless amounts of money to blow on late night cheesy bread and wings, but you’ll soon find that that $325 just isn’t enough. I impressed myself by making it 2.5 months into the spring semester before I ran out of dining dollars. If you can save them, you’re definitely not your average Alabama student.
You may get home sick while away in Tuscaloosa – especially if your hometown is really far away. However, after a little while of being back home without the Boom Boom Room, Fried Fridays, and all your friends, you’ll realize that Tuscaloosa is the best place ever.
