Things That Men Don’t Wear, For Some Reason, But Really Should

Okay, well, maybe not all me—nevermind.

Anyway, it is true that the title of this article is a gross generalisation, but it’s not completely baseless. Men do tend to be way more reserved when it comes to fashion, and it’s a damn shame. It’s a shame for two reasons: first and foremost, the idea that their own perceived image of what masculinity should be is not allowing them to have fun with fashion is… sad to me.

I know it’s not just men’s fault – women are very complicit, too, in fact enforcing toxic masculinity even further, sometimes – but still… They are not letting themselves roam wild.

Moving on, however, my second reason is… they’re properly missing out on some seriously sexy looks, that they might not even realise as sexy-looking. Mistakenly so.

As a big fan of men who constantly advocates for their feelings and self-expression, I’m also here to deliver my blazing hot takes on male fashion, and what men should wear more.

We’re going on a ride here, baby!

Frilled/ruffled shirts

Victorian vampire aesthetic in men’s fashion? Hello, nice to meet you, would you like to stay for dinner?

Ruffled white shirts give you everything: the drama is there, the attractiveness is there, the mystery is there. The air that a white blouse with frills will give a man is impossible to ignore: sophisticated, charming and a bit sneaky, this clothing item is the closest we can get to all the girls’ dreams of meeting a romantic prince.

To top it all off completely, pop a glass of red wine into your hand, and there you go – a dangerous yet alluring gentleman that might be four hundred years old aesthetic is complete!

Turtlenecks

When roaming through the Internet and looking for examples of what I’m talking about, I stumbled upon this beautiful article: “Men! Wear More Turtlenecks.” and I could not possibly agree more even if I tried.

Turtlenecks are cozy, warm and soft, yet they also highlight all the right things while being quite a comfortable piece of clothing. They lengthen the neck, emphasise the physique in all the right places, and make men look cuddly and friendly.

If for other items on this list I can sort of understand why wearing them is not such a widespread sport, I absolutely cannot grasp why men’s fashion does not include more… no, revolve entirely around turtlenecks.

High-waisted jeans

A seemingly present in fashion lookbooks and on fashion Instas, yet virtually non-existent part of everyday men’s fashion, high-waisted jeans are not a must, but a quiet ‘Please?’ from me. Men’s fashion is an enigma to me – how something so cool can be so unpopular is a mystery to be solved.

They look cute, they look cool, they make men look more funky, approachable and no-nonsense due to their fashion choices. In addition, there is a lot of incredibly cute styles and designs that get outright, unjustly ignored because of this fit not being overwhelmingly popular… which is a crime.

Get the look:

Long overcoats

Men’s fashion really revolves around faceless practicality, for some reason, when you can make it about handsome practicality instead.

Men’s topcoats are 1) warm, 2) comfortable and 3) blindingly handsome. Seriously, the suaveness and casual chic that comes into any outfit from an addition of a long topcoat is startling. It’s relaxed yet sleek, fitting to the everyday fashion, yet also to a fancy outing.

Maybe it has something to do with the four hundred years old vampire aesthetic as well. Maybe. I cannot guarantee.

Rings and bracelets

Okay, actually, all jewelry is fantastic – I genuinely believe that all man that don’t wear jewelry are very seriously missing out.

However, there is just something special about rings and bracelets. Hands are gorgeous, which is why it’s always a good idea to ‘adorn’ them, if you will, and rings are such an unnecessary piece of jewelry – unless it’s a wedding ring, of course – that when men wear them you can obviously tell that they’ve put an effort into it, into their fashion sense, and into the way they look.

Which is attractive. Effort is attractive, that’s all there is to it.

Mesh t-shirts

Oh. My. God.

It’s seriously a shame that a lot of men in the west choose to, for some reason, completely ignore the gorgeousness that mesh shirts are.

I’ve noticed, however, that mesh t-shirts have been gaining a lot of traction in ulzzang/Korean fashion, and, honestly? Good for them, I hope that becomes more widespread in the western men’s fashion, too.

They go with everything, they can complete any look, they’re attractive and just the right amount of edgy – cool and attention grabbing, yet not completely screaming and kicking away at people’s eyes. They also highlight beautifully all the parts that should be highlighted – especially so if the man wearing it has a tattoo. Just—great.

Men: what do you wish you wore more often? What’s stopping you? Alternatively, what do you think men wear too often?

Women: what do you think men should wear more often? Are there any things that you really want them to wear, but they seem to avoid specifically?

Let’s discuss some men’s fashion items, and give our boys fashion tips in the comment below!
