Transferring schools is a big decision. You are leaving behind friends and starting over AGAIN. It can be terrifying to enter a school where everyone is no longer a freshman, but yet you still feel like one coming to a brand new school. (I know from experience.) Before making the decision to transfer schools there are some things you should do and ask yourself before in order to make sure you are making the best decision for yourself!
1. Research the best program
If you are planning to transfer; make sure it’s worth it. In the end, college is supposed to lead you to a career. If you are going to change schools, make sure the program you’re interested in is a good and reputable one! You don’t want to get stuck at a school you don’t love, again.
2. ASK YOURSELF
Am I being challenged?
Although breezing through college sounds amazing, it is important to challenge yourself. Once you’re out of college you’ll appreciate the challenges you faced because they’ll teach you to grow!
3. ASK YOURSELF
Are your professors helpful?
Helpful professors are key to a great college experience. Not only will they help you understand the work your doing, but professors are great for connections for internships and careers!
Visit more than one school, take a mock class if you can. Make sure you’re choosing the right school this time and that you can see yourself finishing your college career there!
5. ASK YOURSELF
Did you meet people who are interested in the same thing you are?
Friends who you can trust and have a bond with are important. If you have these people at your current school, are you ready to leave them? And if you don’t have them, do you want to meet new people?
6. ASK YOURSELF
Would somewhere else help me to move more toward my career goal?
Maybe a change in location could help you toward your future career. A city location could be awesome for theater, publishing, etc!
7. Get your favorite professors’ emails!
8. ASK YOURSELF
Do I have a better understanding of other people and the world around me?
College should be an eye opening experience. You’ll meet people from all different backgrounds and cultures. If your school is not opening your eyes to a world beyond yours, it might be time to move on.
9. ASK YOURSELF
Does your school feel like home?
If school doesn’t feel like a second home and if you aren’t comfortable there, transferring might be the right choice for you.
10. ASK YOURSELF Transfer Schools
Are you happy?
This is the most important question to consider. Happiness is vital in order to succeed in college and if you’re not happy it is time to look elsewhere for an education.
