Ever wonder where the saying “Bye, Felicia” came from. I for one am one of those people who have no fucking idea where it originated. So, standard Leah procedure, I did a little digging to figure it out. May as know where the saying came from and what it mean if I’m gonna throw it out there. Here are some of the things I uncovered when trying to figure out this whole “Bye, Felicia” debacle.
Yep, thanks to VH1 Bye Felicia is a show that apparently aims to empower women. The premise of the show is women who “real talk,” get honest and give advice to one another. Not really sure we use the saying for that reason but we can make it work. The show stars life coaches, Missy Young and Deborah Hawkes, who seek out women in Los Angeles who are in need of serious guidance: interview prep, style refinement and reality checks are a few of the things these two dish out to their clients. Each episode covers two different women who are clearly in need of some serious life coaching.
Ever heard of notoriously well-known rapper Ice Cube? Thanks to him, the phrase “Bye, Felicia” came to be. In his ’95 movie debut in Friday, he coined the term after dismissing character Felicia for not allowing him to borrow her car. Fast forward 19 years, in ’08 the term was uploaded onto Urban Dictionary as “someone deemed unimportant.” Hop forward another 3 years and that’s when the clip was added to the definition. In the month of August 2014, #ByeFelicia was tweeted over 35k times.
So there you have it! There’s the story behind bye Felicia.
