The Best Flannel Looks For Guys To Wear This Autumn

Why does Ryan Gosling look so good in this picture? Answer: flannel. Flannel is a multi-season fabric that doesn’t always have to come in the plaid pattern we’re all familiar with. Flannel fabric can be worn in one solid color or several patterns. Find out the best way to use your versatile fabric this Fall and Winter with my best ways for guys to wear flannel.

1. A Flannel Tie

Dress to the season and feel proud if it with a flannel tie. Flannel is a type of fabric, not a pattern. If you don’t feel comfortable courting around a bright red and black plaid tie, I totally get that. Once those around you see the tell-tale sign of flannel, (peach-like fuzz on top of the fabric), they’ll be impressed at your seasonal attire. Try these flannel ties out for size. Each are from The Tie Bar, and priced at $19: one of your most affordable flannel ties out there.

2. Underneath A Vest

As the weather cools down at night, we have the chance to wear a jacket or stay warm with the vest-over-flannel combo. My biggest tip here is to choose a vest that is not too puffy. In my humble opinion, shirts with patterns are meant to show off, not keep hidden from your large vest. A puffy vest will limit the exposure of the pattern on your chest. Puffy vests also look longer on the body, which minimizes the sharpness of your look. The second picture below explains what I DON’T want to see. Pick up the first model’s flannel shirt at TopMan.

3. Tie A Flannel Around Your Waist

Your flannel is a very versatile piece of clothing. It can double as a coat, blanket and pillow. In this case, it also looks good around your waist. I’ve seen this style done in a practical manner, and done just for show. For instance, whenever I tie my flannel around my waist, I do it because I am too hot. But it looks like Kanye can pull off the ‘just for show’ look just fine.

4. Hanging Over a White Undershirt

Throwing my flannel over a white undershirt with a pair of jeans on is my favorite Fall flannel look of all time. It’s my favorite because I know I’m not trying too hard. How easy is it to put an unbuttoned shirt over a white tee? Answer: super easy. I show people around me that, yes I didn’t try with this outfit. But do I look good? Also yes. My favorite flannels are from Patagonia because they are durable. Utilize a solid color flannel and go with the navy blue Fjord flannel from Patagonia.

5. Flannel Shirt Jacket

The flannel jacket is one of my informal favorites. Available in 4 colors, the Wrangler Lined Shirt Jacket captures exactly what you want. This will serve as your thin coat that you can get stains on and wipe your cold, dripping nose with. The sherpa lining is comfy almost to a fault. If you are not wild about sherpa lining, I found a lined flannel jacket without faux wool, at urbanboundaries.com. Whichever one you choose, please avoid the flannel jackets with the attached hoodie. These seem like very lazy looks to me.
