5 Summer Movies That We Can’t Wait To See

With each and every summer that comes, there is always a plethora of good movies that roll out on screen. It is always a difficult choice to choose which movie to go out and see, because there are just that many to choose from. We rallied up five of the best summer movies to check out this summer to make your life a little easier.

1. The Lion King

Release date: July 19

Disney is pumping out so many live action remakes of their classics this summer. There’s Dumbo, and there’s also Aladdin. What we’re most excited for is the revamped version of The Lion King – and how could you not be also?! Let’s talk about the cast first. Simba and Nala are played by Donald Glover and Beyoncé, which means we can expect a bone-chilling rendition of Elton John’s Oscar-winning tune, “Can You Feel The Love Tonight.” There’s so much comedic talent in this cast: John Oliver, Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, Eric Andre, and Keegan-Michael Key. And they’re keeping James Earl Jones on as Mufasa (but let’s be real, nobody could properly voice Mufasa after Jones.)

2. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Release date: July 26

If you’re a die-hard Quentin Tarantino fan, then we’re sure this movie has been on your summer bucket list for a long, long time. Tarantino asked film critics to keep major plot points a secret, which is either a brilliant marketing tactic to get us to watch the movie or a reflection of how personal this movie is to the director. Though we don’t know too many details, here is what we do know. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood is set in 1969, towards the end of Hollywood’s Golden Age. The movie follows the story of a TV actor, Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), and his stunt double, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), who are trying to make it big in the industry. What we’re most excited to see in this destined summer movie blockbuster, is the intersection of the infamous Manson cult murders of 1969. Who knows how Tarantino will portray Sharon Tate’s (Margot Robbie) gruesome demise on screen.

3. The Dead Don’t Die

Release date: June 14

Ok, we know what you’re thinking: another zombie movie? Before you roll your eyes (or before you lose your head), we promise you this zombie comedy is not one you’ll want to miss out on this summer. Unlike Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, The Dead Don’t Die features three bespectacled police officers, and a zany Scottish mortician with impressive sword skills and a penchant for drag makeup. This movie also boasts “the greatest zombie cast ever disassembled”, and we couldn’t agree more (though Woody Harrelson would make a great addition to the team with his keen knowledge on zombie killing.)

4. The Farewell

Release date: July 12

What would you do if your family asked you to keep a harrowing secret? You would probably keep it since its your family, right? What if this secret directly effects the livelihood of another family member, would you still keep that secret? Billi (Awkwafina) is placed in this exact predicament when her family asks her to not tell her grandmother that she is dying, so as not to ruin the final days she has left on this world. Wow, right? Deemed to be Awkwafina’s breakout role, we are (not literally) dying to see how The Farewell unfolds, as Billi and her family plan to act normally as they prepare for an impromptu wedding.

5. Brittany Runs a Marathon

Release date: August 23

This summer movie is lauded as one we can all relate to. Brittany Forgler (Jillian Bell) is a loveable hot mess who spends most of her days partying on through the early hours. In an attempt to to score Adderall from the doctor’s office, Brittany is instead prescribed a different medication: to get healthy. Now forced to come to terms with her lifestyle choices, Brittany decides to take up running, and slowly but surely she starts to notice the positive influence it has on her life. This summer movie is about taking responsibility and taking care of yourself, and who can’t relate to that?
