1. You cringe when the word “South” is mentioned.

“Did someone say West Brunswick? Hell yes.” “Go Trojans.” “Go big green!” “Beat the Cougars.” “Did you hear we made it to the fourth round of playoffs one time?” “We have the best student section.” The rivalry with their cheerleaders to see who could tumble the most was well known.

2. Wilmington and Myrtle Beach is how you describe where you live.

You know Ocean Isle? Holden Beach? Myrtle Beach? OHHH YEAH YEAH. You know Wilmington? OMG YEAH WRIGHTSVILLE UNCW YES. Smack dab in the middle of those. We have the Walmart and the new Zaxbys.

3. San Felipe is the OG date spot.

I can’t tell you how many dates I have been to at San Felipe, whether it be with my girls or with a boy. It will always be the spot and I will never get used to the new layout of the restaurant. I’ll take an ACP and a water with lemon.

4. Walmart means hiding from your old teacher and being forced into side hugs from people you knew in high school.

I can’t tell you how many times I have hid behind my mom so someone didn’t see me, until they see my mom then of course we have to have an entire conversation with them. Those people that side hug you are the ones that you will always be friends with but only talk to like 3 times a year and they always say “can’t talk to nobody no more” or “You forgot about me.”

5. Hardee’s is a thing of the past.

Hardee’s? Oh you mean The Grille? Or you mean Zaxbys? Pray for that location. ALTHOUGH, THERE WAS PART OF A MOVIE SHOT THERE OKAY.

6. You spend the last week before Christmas in Belk and Bath and Body Works.

You and your siblings remembering you should probably get your parents Christmas presents but the closest mall is 45 minutes away.

7. Even though you are from the beach, you don’t go everyday like people think you do because you are working a summer day job you got through your friend’s cousin’s mom.

IT’S NOT ABOUT WHAT YOU KNOW, IT’S ABOUT WHO YA KNOW. No, but seriously, our friends and relatives are very helpful in this community.

8. You get super hyped when you take a trip to Myrtle Beach because of the gas prices.

9. You are constantly catering to tourists from the North.

No, your table isn’t ready. It’s been one minute and I gave you a 45-minute wait time. No, I wasn’t kidding. You found one bug in your beach house? Wow, crazy. I’m shocked it was only one.

10. Planet Fun was your go-to spot in middle school.

Facebook status: “Who’s going to pf tonight????” Just don’t forget to ask your parents for that $10 cover charge.

11. School is cancelled as soon as the temperature drops.

We see “snow” once a year and when we do the whole town shuts down. Sorry if you wanted to make a sandwich or eat cereal, all of the milk and bread is gone.

12. You will always come back.

Face it, this is your home. There is no other place that can mimic the way it feels when you ride back into your town for the first time in a while. The sights and sounds touch you in a different way than any other place. Be proud of the small town you come from.
