Greek life can be portrayed poorly in the media, but there are so many benefits to these organizations. Whether you are looking for the philanthropic, social, or professional opportunities, there is a positive aspect to find in a chapter. Here are 7 reasons to join Greek life.

1. Immediately making campus home

Heading off to college to experience new things can be terrifying, especially if you don’t have any good friends going with you. Luckily, most universities have recruitment either before classes start or shortly after. By going through recruitment and joining Greek life you can meet people that will eventually be your sisters/brothers and also meet people who will end up in other chapters. By a couple weeks into the semester, you will have a tight-knit group of people that you can go to for help. It will make the transition into college so much easier.

2. Support in academics

When you need help in a class there is a high chance that someone in your chapter has taken it before. They might have the notes still, or maybe you just need them to go over some material with you. Whatever it is, there is always going to be someone there to help you in classes. There are also GPA requirements you have to meet to stay in your chapter so you will have extra motivation to do well.

3. Leadership Opportunities

There are so many ways to have a leadership position in your chapter. Whether it is on the executive board or a less time-consuming position, anything you do or plan for your chapter is a great resume builder. You will have a chance to both apply for a position or be nominated by your peers, so either way, it is a rewarding experience. Through these opportunities, you will get a chance to host events in the chapter and with other chapters in Greek life.

4. Social Events

As a member of the chapter, you will have access to all kinds of social events. There are formals, socials, sisterhoods, and philanthropy events that you will be able to attend and participate in. This will give you an opportunity to network throughout the community and meet people from different chapters. You can also connect with alumni of these chapters and learn about their time as a collegiate member and how it benefited them.

5. Mastering small talk

Recruitment is just never ending small talk and if you go through it, you will master it. This is a great quality to have for dates, business meetings, or just getting coffee with an old friend. You will also get used to sharing things about yourself in an appropriate way and you’ll quickly figure out what you should and should not talk about in these situations.

After you leave Greek life, you will have thousands of people from around the country to connect with. Many professionals who were a part of your chapter at their own universities and they will be more willing to speak with or answer questions from someone who they have an already established connection with. It’s possible that a hiring manager will be an alumnus of your chapter and take a chance on you because of it.

7. Philanthropic opportunities

While a member of Greek life you will have a multitude of opportunities to raise money and participate in philanthropic events. Helping these great organizations is a great thing to put on your resume and talk about during an interview, especially if you have planned and executed one of them.
