8 Places To Visit In Devon That You Just Have To See

Devon, one of the UK’s great wonders. It has something for everyone; amazing beaches, independent shops and a great deal of history. With so much to see and often little time in life to do things, this guide will have the perfect places to visit in Devon.

1. THE CITY OF PLYMOUTH:

Plymouth, also known as “Britain’s Ocean City” is one of Devon’s major towns. A must see when visiting is the Plymouth Hoe, one of the greatest natural harbours in the world, yes the world! Here you will find the iconic Smeaton’s tower light house. Climb the old worldly stair case for iconic views of the coast line. Or, you may fancy a dip in the Tinside Lido, an open air swimming pool situated in the heart of the Plymouth Hoe. Don’t forget your swimming costume!

2. EXETER, SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP:

If you’re thinking of places to visit in Devon, shopping would entail the local charity shop and a small number of independent shops, you are wrong! Exeter offers a memorable shopping experience due to it’s architecture and offering of independent and big store names. Enjoy a well deserved break after your long day of shopping, sat on the grass outside the 800 year old Exeter Cathedral!

When you think of Devon, beaches is normally the first thing that springs to mind. But, with so many to choose from, which one is the best? For an idyllic beach experience; clear water, quiet surroundings and golden sand springs to mind. If you are after all of these things, Leas Foot Sands Beach, located in South Milton is the beach for you. This hidden gem offers a sheltered space to relax and un-wind. The rocks at either end of the beach make it a great place to snorkel and rock pool when the tide goes out!

4. TORQUAY HARBOUR:

Torquay Harbour also known as the English Rivera, is a base in Devon for many water sports and boat trips. The vibrant atmosphere offers great views over the harbour and a great spot to sit and enjoy a light bite to eat, or a glass of wine as the sun is setting over the water. There is also a great choice of independent and well known shops for a vibrant and varied experience.

5. SETTING SAIL IN DARTMOUTH:

Cruising on a boat, is another association that springs to mind when thinking about Devon, a secret gem is the Picnic Boat tour in Dartmouth. The best part, is the tour can be especially catered to suit your needs. They offer a romantic tour, a family tour and a range of others which makes it special to each individual. This tour does need to be pre booked, but is worth the arranging prior to your visit for this magical experience! So, enjoy your meal and a glass of bubbly as you cruise down the English Rhine, one of England’s most perfect rivers!

6. COSTAL WALKS: HOPE’S COVE TO SALCOMBE

One of the many popular places to visit in Devon is here. Walking is a great activity to do whilst visiting Devon. Take a break from driving and enjoy the picturesque walk from Hope Cove to Salcombe. A favoured Devonshire walk, this popular gem offers hidden coves, exhilarating views as well as wild ponies! Along the way you can stop and enjoy Devonshire cuisine and a range of picnic stops. This gentle walk will really give you a true Devonshire experience.

7. A VILLAGE EXPERIENCE:

Villages are dotted all over Devon, and offer a quaint old worldly experience during your time in Devon.  Paignton, is am upcoming destination that has grown in popularity. Enjoy a walk along the pier to take in spectacular views as well as arcade games and attractions. To finish of your day enjoy a walk along the pebbled beach with an ice cream in hand.

You can not visit Devon without experiencing the local cuisine. Devon is world famous for fish and chips and you will see a “chippy” at every corner. It has received a number of awards and recommendations and voted no.1 fish and chip shop in North Devon. So, sit down or dine away with this local favourite.
