10 Places To Get The Best Burgers In Houston

There’s nothing better on a hot day than a cold beer, a patio, and a burger. Whether you’re a burger purist or you pile your toppings mile high, there’s a burger on this list for you. Here are 10 places to get the best burgers in Houston.

Lankford Grocery & Market

Nestled in the Fourth Ward, Lankford Grocery’s mission statement is Nothing Small, Nothing Healthy, and Nothing Fast. There are no truer words for this low-key burger joint. Lankford has every topping you could think of, and some you haven’t, like mac & cheese and ranch beans (not on the same burger of course!) This is the perfect place to relax at a picnic table and slowly drift away into a food coma.

Stanton’s City Bites

Just south of the Heights, Stanton’s City Bites feels like an antique shop met an old school diner. This family-run restaurant originally started as a grocery store in 1961 and evolved into the burger restaurant we know and love. You’ll have to frequent this restaurant to try all their crazy burgers; Stanton’s City Bites features everything from the Luke Skyburger (topped with deep fried bacon) to the Chili Cheeseburger. Need we say more?

B&B Butchers

For the fancy burger eater, look no further than B&B Butchers. By night, this restaurant is known for steaks and fine dining, but by day, you can treat yourself to one of their many B&B Burgers. Go traditional with their Butcher Shop Burger, or try out the Truffle Burger to match the upscale ambiance.

Flip ‘n Patties

As a fellow Filipino-American, I have to give this place props. Flip ‘n Patties is the perfect combination of Filipino comfort food and a classic burger. If you grew up eating Spam and rice like me, the Brekpas is the burger for you, or try the Amboy for a more traditional lettuce, tomato, and onion type burger. Also, there are few places in Houston that can make a truly good Halo Halo. This dessert might look overwhelming, but trust me, you won’t regret ordering it!

Bernie’s Burger Bus

With a school themed menu and a yellow school bus inside the restaurant, Bernie’s Burger Bus will make you feel like you’ve gone back to school without all the homework. Try The Principal for a classic style burger or go crazy with the Fire Drill. Just don’t forget fries and a shake!

Tookie’s

If you’re venturing out to the southeast side of town, be sure to make a pit stop in Seabrook for Tookie’s Burgers. Tookie’s has been around since 1975, and when you taste their burgers, you will understand why. Don’t forget a side of Mama Ethel’s famous onions rings to complete your order. There are lots of options when it comes to the best burgers in Houston.

The Shack

Take a trip to The Shack in Cypress if you want a messy burger of epic proportions. They literally have a 5 Napkins Burger! The Shack is also known for their crazy toppings and buns. The Grease & Weasel uses Honeybuns in lieu of a traditional sesame bun and The Bad Decision is served between two grilled cheese sandwiches!

Hay Merchant

If you’re plugged into the foodie world, The Hay Merchant needs no introduction. Chef and owner, Chris Shepherd, is famous for making classic dishes into quintessentially Houston staples. The Hay Merchant features everything from Fish Sauce Chicken Wings to a roasted pig head, served with fresh tortillas and kimchi salsa. Their Cease and Desist Burger is equally impressive. It is the classic burger, done to perfection.

Champ Burger

You can’t mention the best burgers in Houston without mentioning Champ Burger. Located in Eado, Champ Burger is the kind of classic no-frills burger that brings you back to a simpler time, (which makes sense, because it’s been open since 1963!) You won’t find outlandish toppings here, but you will find great burgers, done right.

Bubba’s Texas Burger Shack

Bubba’s Texas Burger Shack is literally “The Place Under the Freeway”. It is the perfect place to drink a beer, watch the Texan’s game and eat a classic burger. They are known for their buffalo burgers, so be sure to try one!
