5 New Artists To Check Out On Spotify

We all get bored with the same old music each day. I know I could spend hours upon hours searching the depths of Spotify for new songs to add to my playlists. And while sometimes it could feel like no other music could satisfy our tastes, there is still hope. Here are some pretty cool artists to recently release music on the streaming service.

1. Jade Bird

With soulful vocals and incredible guitar skills, Bird caught my attention on first listen. Her new debut album was released in April and details her relationships trials and tribulations. For any girl out there looking for an explanation of a broken heart, Bird is the lady to turn to. It is rare for me to find an album that I am not sick of after a couple listens through and Bird’s is one of them. Two of my favorite tracks from the album are “Uh-Huh” and “Motto”.

2. Noah Kahan

When heard one of Kahan’s tracks for the first time, I thought I wasn’t going to like him, because his sound seemed different from what I typically listen to. However, after a couple of listens through his main hits, I really felt I could relate to what he was trying to convey in his lyrics. Kahan is from New England and in the song “Mess” he talks about these roots, which is pretty cool for anyone listening in the Northeast. Also if he may seem familiar already, you may have heard him on his track “Hurt Somebody”, which was re-released into a duet with Julia Michaels.

3. Mabel

Mabel showcases her Spanish roots in her empowering mixtape “Ivy to Roses”. Her tracks detail the struggle of staying in control, but also trying to be vulnerable in a relationship. Talk about a girl who knows how to spell out exactly what she wants from her man. These songs are perfect to play when hanging with the girls or just relaxing. Also a lot of these songs like “Don’t Call Me Up” and “Ring Ring” to add to your gym mix too!

4. Barrie

Barrie is a Brooklyn based band that is dreamy in all the right ways. In their new debut album “Happy To Be Here” the band’s lyrics capture a sense of youth, longing and the desire to feel like you belong. Lead singer Barrie Lindsay has airy vocals that will transport you miles away from wherever you are. So when you’re looking for something mellow on a hot summer day overlooking the water, pop on one of their hits like “Darjeeling” or “Tal Uno”.

5. Sam Fender

British singer Sam Fender is certainly unapologetic in his pessimistic view of the world and love, but I think that gives his music a sense of grit and realness that cannot be replicated. His voice is very raw and you can tell he is singing from his heart. Instead of focusing on material subjects, Fender sings about injustice, the superficial nature of our society and all of the ugliness that comes from war and power in the wrong hands. Two tracks that really struck me of his were “The Sound” and “Hypersonic Missles”.

I love seeing an unfamiliar artist on Spotify. It restores my faith that the music business has room for newcomers and in a world that is so dominated by the idea of commercial hits, it is nice to see honest lyrics that are not to please the masses, but the individual listener.

For me, a song isn’t a song without lyrics that can strike chords in the mind and in the heart. Therefore if an artist can do so, they are worth noting in my book. So do yourself a favor and check out these five talented artists!
