10 Looks For Being the Second Best Dressed At A Wedding

I have an unspoken rule for myself, be the best dressed in every room I enter. The only time I make an exception to this rule is with weddings, where the Bride should be the best dressed but I aim to be the second best dressed. With wedding season shifting from summer to fall I’ve laid out the best looks to be the second best dressed at any given wedding.

1. Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits have always been a favorite for an easy put together look, but jumpsuits can also be both classy and sexy. While all the other guests are in their floral patterned knee length dress, everyone will take notice of the girl in the bold red jumpsuit. Jumpsuits are perfect for any formality of wedding, since they come in so many styles.  A black tie wedding at a grand hotel or a country chic wedding in a barn, you can find any jumpsuit to fit the occasion. These are even more perfect for winter when it’s cold so you don’t have to worry about ruining your dress with tan panty hose. (Seriously never wear these, there is never an excuse to wear tan pantyhose.) So instead throw on a bold jumpsuit with an open back and those heels you’ve been meaning to wear but haven’t been able to and stand out at any wedding.

2. All Lace

All over lace can go one of two ways, it can look timeless and classy, or if you are wearing cheap looking lace is looks unkempt and trashy. When I say an all lace dress, I’m not talking about the $9.99 body con lace dress from Forever 21 you wore to your friends bachelorette. The all over lace look that will really make you the best dressed, are the wide laces that typically have a layer underneath to really highlight the lace. The cheap lace will probably just rip so save that for a more casual outing. This look is so classy but the options are endless. A navy lace with a nude underlay, or black mesh lace that is full length but has a mini skirt underneath. Any all lace dress you go with, you’ll be sure to stand out, just make sure you pick a dress that is versatile because you’ll want to wear it everyday after all the compliments you get.

3. Open back

If there is an option to wear a dress with an open back, you choose the open back. Open back anything makes the look sexy without being too forward. It shows some skin without all the judgement from a plunging neckline, which believe me I am also in full support of that. But sometimes for a wedding you don’t want to steal too much focus, so opt for a higher neckline and an open back. Open back can be fun because you can have just a big open back or tons of dresses come with designs and patterns on the open back. Plus its a nice to wear in summer when it’s so uncomfortable hot, you won’t accumulate sweat and have that showing through on your dress, no one will even notice with an open back! Tons of wedding dresses these days also have an open back to them, because you can make this look sexy but its still classy. So take a pointer from the brides themselves and opt for an open back look that will ensue you are the second best dressed at the wedding.

4. High slit

I love the idea of wearing a long dress to weddings but it’s a fine line. The chiffon dresses that billow out, look like bridesmaids dresses, and unless you are actually a bridesmaid you don’t want to try and copy there look. Which is perfect because although bridesmaids dressed recently have stepped it up, being a guest is more fun and for sure more fashionable. The problem with full length dressed that I always have is either them dragging or I have a hard time walking in them; this is where a high leg slit comes to save the look. A high slit not only will be more practical when you’re dancing and can actually move but, it will also make the look sexier. A simple high slit in a dress changes the entire look of the dress. It take an otherwise boring look to bold. A kelly green dress changes from a simple dress that many might not take note of, to making you the second best dressed, even more so than the bridesmaids.

5. Simple strapless

I’ve been it’s simplicity for wedding recently. I want a look that will make me stand out, but not steal the show, since after all it’s not my wedding day. Simple strapless dresses in solid colors have been an obsession of mine recently. They are timeless and come in so many other styles, you can opt for a shorter dress for a casual wedding or a long gown for a formal wedding. This elegant look will draw attention, but not piss off the bride. The only downside to this look, is the problem we all have with it falling down, but if you pick one with a tighter waist, that will help not only to sculpt the look but to help the dress stay in its place, so all you have to worry about is looking good.

6. Midi

Midi length is my new favorite length of all time, in fact I may never wear mini lengths again. They’re just so practical and classy. I love not being able to worry about bending over but also being able to walk comfortable and confidently. The other reason I am living for midi dresses is how damn classy they look. Like a simple strapless, I love the simplicity of this look, but also the versatility. It’s more of an elegant look than a mini dress, and you feel absolutely unstoppable in this look. It will give you just enough confidence to walk up to that groomsman and ask for his number, but that’s only if he doesn’t ask you first. This looks sure to make you the second best dressed.

7. Punge Neck

Remember what I said before about a plunging neckline, it’s not that the look can’t be done for a wedding, it’s just much harder to pull off in an appropriate for wedding look. The key to this is to not have that amazing Versace plunging neckline that J.Lo made famous, you will absolutely steal the show with that’s not something you want to do at someone else’s wedding. You want to be the second best dressed, and a neckline down to you bellybutton, is not the answer. However a plunging neckline is a great look to add when the dress is otherwise uneventful. It adds some flare and can be a really sexy look, without being over the top. The key to a plunge neck, is to find the line not to cross with your neckline. So get that low-cut dress, just make sure you save the really plunging one for a different occasion.

8. Silk

Silk is making a comeback from the 90’s when supermodels showed us that this fabric needed to be seen. This look was made famous with spaghetti straps and curve hugging silhouette, and it’s still a timeless look. With silk and faux silk being so easy to find, this is a look everyone has to try out. A Burgundy silk dress will steal the show from the patterned, mismatched dresses you’re up against. This look can be sophisticated and sensual all at the same time. You’ll feel like Cindy Crawford walking the runway at the height of her success, strutting in this silk dress.

9. Off the Shoulder

Off the shoulder looks have always been a favorite formal wear option, but when it comes to being a guest at wedding, it’s always over looked for dresses with straps. Well, not anymore. Off the shoulder looks exude class. It shows off your collarbone but covers your arms some, drawing more attention upward. It frames your figure more than dresses with straps because it’s more structured than most with straps. Dresses with straps tend to be looser and more flowey which don’t always show off your best features. Go for an off the shoulder look for some class that will age you up; so now you’ll never have a problem with the bartender thinking your real ID is a fake, even when you’re 24. (Happens to the best of us.)

10.  High Neck

If there is one thing in this fashion world I love more than anything, it’s a turtleneck. Luckily for me, turtlenecks can come in all forms of fashion. To me there is literally nothing more classy or put together than the look of a high neck. It accentuate and elongates your torso and brings the attention to your face. High necks are not just for winter to keep you warm, it’s a timeless look for all occasions but will for sure make you the second best dressed at the wedding.
