9 Interesting Documentaries When You Don’t Feel Like A Movie

Sometimes movies can get a little bit tiring and a bit boring – the same storylines, the same concepts and the same types of characters. If you feel like sitting down and watching something but don’t want to watch a movie, maybe it is time to give documentaries a go. Documentaries are a new form of escape. You are guaranteed to cry, shake, laugh and learn. They are educational and sometimes you find you have an emotional connection. Here are 9 interesting documentaries when you don’t feel like a movie.

1. Icarus (2017)

Winner of an Academy Award for best documentary, filmmaker Bryan Fogel investigates the competitive world of cycling. Fogel explores the option to take performance-enhancing drugs to win cycling races. He asks for help from Grigory Rochenkov, the head of the Russian anti-doping laboratory. It goes from a personal experiment to an insight into sports and a political conspiracy.  

2. Making A Murder (2015 – present)

One of the most influential true crime documentaries of this era. This documentary looks at the imprisonment, exoneration, re-arrest and trial of Steven Avery. Avery was charged and convicted of the murder of Teresa Halbach. Check out why this documentary has been the topic of so much discussion.

3. Amanda Knox (2016)

Amanda Knox was twice convicted and then later acquitted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher. She spent four years in an Italian jail. This documentary interviews Amanda Knox and many important people of the case including her ex-boyfriend and the Italian prosecutor. It also looks at the influence tabloid journalism had on the case.

4. Homecoming (2019)

Homecoming gives an in-depth look into the lead up to Beyoncé’s 2018 performance at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. It shows Beyoncé’s comeback from having her twins. It gives the audience a true insight from a creative conception to the cultural movement.

5. Gaga: Five Foot Two (2017)

Even if you are not a Lady Gaga fan, this documentary gives a great insight into one of music’s biggest names. This documentary gives the audience an unfiltered, behind the scenes access into many events, including her fifth studio album Joanne, her halftime performance at Super Bowl LI, her guest role in American Horror Story and her struggle with chronic pain caused by the onset of fibromyalgia.

6. Free Solo (2018)

Free Solo looks at free climber Alex Honnold’s attempt to summit the face of Yosemite’s El Capitan rock formation without any ropes or equipment. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Documentary, the creators give the audience a real insight into Honnold’s life and why and how he does what he does.

7. Cowspiracy (2014)

Cowspiracy explores the global meat and dairy industry. This documentary investigates environmental concerns caused by animal agriculture. After watching this documentary, many people are put off eating meat and decide to go vegan or vegetarian.

8. Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened (2019)

As the title suggests, this documentary looks at the failed Fyre Festival in 2017 and its creator Billy McFarland. The Fyre Festival was deemed one of the biggest parties on the planet where ordinary people can party with celebrities and models. It ended up being a massive fraud and complete disaster.

9. The Inventor: Out For Blood In Silicon Valley (2019)

This documentary gives a real insight into success and deception by exploring Elizabeth Holmes and her former company Theranos. Holmes was the youngest self-made female billionaire and Theranos was her multi-billion-dollar tech company. Soon after, it all went to pieces.
