How To Throw The Best Fall Themed Party That Will Guarantee A Good Time

When the only question people are asking the host is Where’s the bathroom?, you know it’s a good party. And when lots of people show up dressed to the theme, you know it’s gonna be a great party. Let’s take a walk down our list of How-To’s on throwing a fall themed party. Listen, if it were easy, everyone would do it.

1. Prepare

A fall themed party will require preparation. My rule of thumb in my experience, is you have to allow 3 full days for your guests to get your invite (via Facebook or text). This means there’s not that much time for you to mess around. You have to sit down with your friends and plan this out. When you’re hosting a get-together where your friends, you can drop that news the night of. But a themed party requires three days to allow your guests the time they need to purchase or borrow the accessories for their outfits.

Pro-Tip: Send out the invites 3 days beforehand. Then send the invite one day before to remind them.

2. Themes I Like

When thinking about fall-themed parties when you’re in college, don’t try too hard. If you create a theme that requires people to purchase expensive costumes, they won’t come. They’ll say, I’m gonna get f*cked up whether I wear a 1920’s black dress or not.

  • Halloween, obvi. If the worst party school in America throws ONE party all year, it will be a Halloween party.
  • Safari. Most guys have a button down short-sleeved shirts, or Hawaiians. They look great on girls too.
  • Character Party (i.e., Star Wars!). Have everyone dress as the same character. Make male and female character options.
  • These are my top options. Check out 50 more here.

3. That Global Warming Tho

I’m no smart numbers and weather person, but average Fall temperatures in the Midwest and East Coast are rising. This means you may have great outdoor weather to throw either an outdoor, or day party (day + party = darty). Mix it up! So many people love a change of scenery and a change of pace. If you have an apartment with a decent backyard, or an apartment with a rooftop deck, give the people what they want and show them the sun!

5. Lights

Because it adds sex appeal to your party. Lights are a low-key essential component to the enjoyment of the party. No one wants those bright LED bulbs shining in their face when they’re flirting with someone over the noise of the music. You can tape Christmas string lights to your ceiling, or purchase multi colored led light strings that you can also string on your ceiling. Have a lamp? Just put it in the corner.

6. LOTS Of Cups

If one person has 8 drinks, they just may use eight different cups to drink from. Then they’ll complain about the lack of cups when they go up for their ninth drink.

7. Loud Music

No cute little JBL or Bose pregame speakers from freshman year. You need big speakers that will fill the room, the outside, or both. Music fills the awkward silence between you and that cutie across from you.

8. People

This is a crucial component to a party, doncha think? And the way to get people to your party is to (1) choose a day that does not conflict with another party on campus, and (2) give your potential guests at least three days notice.

9. An Accessible Venue

Holding your party well off-campus, or away from bars you may eventually go to is giving your potential guests an excuse not to come.
