Parties are a time to have fun with friends and enjoy yourself. The last thing you want to think about is something bad happening to you or one of your friends. It’s all about who you surround yourself with, but even then you can’t be held responsible for other’s actions. However, you can protect yourself, so here are tips on how to stay safe at a party!
We’re not expecting you to be attached at the hip with your friends. But in order to stay safe, you should have a group of one or two friends with you at the party. “There is strength in numbers” so don’t stay and party if your friends decide to leave. Of course, if you have friends that are already at the party then stay. Just make sure you trust that they can help you get back to your dorm, apartment or home. Always, always, always tell someone where you are going and what time they should expect you to be back. Let a roommate or a friend that’s not going to the party know when you plan on leaving. The last thing you want is to make your friends and family worried!
If you choose to drink and are of the legal age make sure you keep your drink safe. This will keep you safe too. Even if you’re not drinking, your regular drink like Coca Cola or Sprite can also be tampered with, so watch out for that too. Do not accept any drinks from people you do not know. If anyone offers to make you a drink, walk to the kitchen with them and watch them make it. And if you are unsure about your drink at any point throughout the night then leave it instead of taking a risk. Consider purchasing Check Your Drink (CYD), it’s fairly inexpensive and will give you peace of mind if you think your drink may have been spiked.
Do not stick around and hang out with anyone who makes you uncomfortable! If you are getting that feeling then it’s for a good reason. Listen to your instincts and get out of there as soon as you can. Tell a friend also, that way if anything happens you have someone to back you up. That friend can also help get you out of an uncomfortable situation if that person continues bothering you.
Everyone has a limit, so know yours. Don’t walk into your first party and drinking without knowing when to stop. You might do or say something you’ll regret and get a bad reputation. Be careful or it could be your first and last party.
Knowing your limits will also help you stay safe around a guy or girl. If your intention is to hook up at a party then know your limits and what you’re comfortable doing. If that partner doesn’t respect your limits then they never will so leave before things can escalate.
Charge your phone before you go out. You never know when you’re going to need it!
Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you’re immune to it. Remember that you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to or feel uncomfortable with. You have the choice and the power to say no and walk away.
