The same girl has been popping up on your social media feeds for a few months now, and you can’t seem to get her out of your mind. After liking her Instagrams and throwing her the occasional retweet, you’ve decided you’re ready to try to actually get to know this girl. If this sounds like you, keep reading to learn how to slide into DMs without looking like a total creep.
Before you do absolutely anything else, you need to figure out which social media platform you are going to use. Your best bet is most likely Instagram or Twitter, since direct messages are just more common on those two. A lot of people don’t even remember to check their Facebook messages, so it probably won’t get you a response.
Once you get the follow back from your crush, you will be all set to send that first DM. Do not, I repeat, do NOT try a different social media channel if your first DM goes unanswered. That is entering the creepy zone, and that is not what you want.
While you shouldn’t overthink it, try to put a little thought into what you’re going to say. There is nothing enticing about finding a “hey” in your inbox. Maybe reference something she tweeted about this week, or mention that you love the coffee house she just posted her Instagram from.
Honestly, the longer the DM, the creepier. (Unless you are setting up some elaborate joke that you truly think is going to charm the pants off of this girl.) Even though it is well-intentioned, she might find it strange that you took the time to write a whole paragraph. Keep it short and sweet and she won’t get weirded out.
No. Don’t even think about it. Can you imagine how painfully awkward you will make your life if you DM this girl with a sext and she doesn’t respond? If you run into her in person, you will rue the day you sent her a sext. And I’m not going to lie to you, she will probably show her friends what you sent her.
If you are just looking to get to know this girl a little better, then the stakes are pretty low. All you have to do is get her talking! If you want her number and actually meet up in person, you’re going to have to work a little harder. Don’t ask for her number immediately, you have to build a bit of a rapport first. No matter what, treat her with respect and have fun with it. Those will be the two biggest factors in how to slide into DMs and actually get results.
