Midterms are always a stressful time for any college student. Whether you bomb your exams or you aced them, you need to remember that you are NOT your grades. However, if you didn’t do as well as you would have liked, there are a few things you should do to help you recover from midterm week.
So you failed (or did a lot worse than you thought on) one exam. Accept it. That is just ONE aspect of your total grade. Don’t let it get you down. You can’t change your grade either. Keeping straight A’s the whole semester is obviously the ultimate goal, but professors respect improvement. They’ll notice students who work hard to make up for past mistakes and turn failures into progress.
Go talk to them, write them an email, schedule a meeting time – whichever way you can spend some time to discuss your grade with your professor – do it. This shows that you care about your education and your grades. This can even help if you’re on the border of a C or B as the professor will likely round up if you show initiative.
If your exam is handed back this is a good opportunity to look over what you did wrong and see how you can improve. This will help prepare you for the next exam. Keep practicing the things that you are struggling with and make sure that you have them down sooner rather than later. You are going to be learning new items in class and you don’t want to fall behind because you still don’t understand things from the first half.
As a general rule you should always complete extra credit opportunities. Unfortunately, even if they’re not officially mandatory, some professors tend to associate students who don’t do them with laziness, whether that’s fair or not. It’s also a great way to help your grade out!
Find a group that you enjoy being around and who have a better grasp on the material. Sometimes studying with friends doesn’t work out as well as you’d like, so if you need to, hire a tutor. Your school might offer free tutors, but if not, many people offer their time for a small fee per hour.
Take some time for yourself; you have studied hard and you need a bit of relaxation. Head to bed early, don’t set an alarm if possible. This is the perfect period to watch Netflix without feeling guilty, because guess what – midterm week is over! Eat your favorite food and simply relax, you’ve earned it, whether you failed or not.
