How To Perfect The Art Of Time Management In College

If you’re already a student in college, the phrase “time management” is most likely either your best friend or your worst enemy. Either way, you should know how important and prevalent of a role it plays in your life on a daily basis.
If you are a soon-to-be college student, don’t worry; you’ll soon see exactly what I mean. Effective time management skills are detrimental and almost a direct correlation to success in college. So to make sure you stay on the right track and remain on top of your duties, follow these tips to master the art of time management!

1. List Your Tasks & Responsibilities

Ideas without action or effort put forth behind them are just that; ideas. The first step of the time management process is to list out every single thing you need to complete. Without a concrete, tangible list of to-do’s, your chances of getting distracted and off task increase dramatically – especially on busy days.
We’re all human and we all make mistakes. So don’t rely on your brainpower to remember everything! Write things down and knock them out one by one. The feeling of accomplishment you’ll get from getting things done will motivate you to keep going!

2. Prioritize Prioritize Prioritize!

After you have all your duties mapped out and ready to be taken care of, it’s time to prioritize them. This step is also crucial to the process of time management, so don’t skip it! You can execute these several different ways, but here are two of the most popular:
By importance – Attack whichever task that personally holds the most weight or value to you. Normally the most important is also the most vigorous, so this method allows you to knock it out early, having the remainder of your tasks get easier as you go.
By deadline – Whichever task is due first gets completed first, regardless of importance. This method directly supports time management and almost guarantees you to stack on track, as long as you remain consistent and see every task through.

3. AVOID PROCRASTINATION

Considering how widespread of an issue this is amongst the human race, writing that in all caps was definitely necessary. Let’s be honest though, you won’t always be in the mood to be productive and excited to get these things done. Sometimes you just want a break, and that’s completely understandable. Again, we’re human.
However, even though procrastinating will most likely happen at some point in your college career, the absolute last thing you want to do is have it become a habit. Once it gets to that point, you’ll start to feel like your entire life is a game of academic catch-up.
Procrastination is essentially the equivalent of mentally responding to a text, but never actually sending it. Visualizing yourself doing the work is the first step, and although that step is vital, it won’t be beneficial to you in any type of way unless you execute!

4. Don’t Overwork Yourself

When you’re scheduling and figuring out what your day is going to consist of, be sure to set realistic standards for yourself. Don’t overdo it. Doing so will only result in you burning out early and failing to complete the remainder of your tasks for that day.
Furthermore, it can lead to stress, and stress is a mental obstacle nobody wants to battle in efforts of mastering time management. Stay calm, work at a steady pace and remain level-headed!
By now, you should realize how impactful a healthy sense of time management can be. These skills will stick with you and benefit you not only during your college career but also in your career field and beyond. It’s a skill that’s applicable in several different areas of life, so take advantage!
