When a relationship breaks up, usually the partners want some space and time to think about themselves before they can move on. This is the same with making friends with your ex. You will both need time to revaluate the situation and relationship.

For example, by taking them out for dinner you are showing them that you still care. By turning up at their house randomly, shows you don’t.
