How To Have The Perfect Minimalist Bedroom

Having a minimalist bedroom might seem like a dream that you can’t quite reach. It might seem difficult but having a minimalist bedroom isn’t impossible. Below are a few tips, tricks and ideas of how to achieve an Instagram worthy minimalist bedroom. It may take some effort to get the minimalist you’ve always fantasized about but the time will definitely be worth it. Your friends will be impressed over your ability to create such a clean and chic space. You’ll never want to leave your room.

1. Get Rid Of Clutter

First thing’s first, you’re going to need to get rid of clutter. That doesn’t mean you need to get rid of everything you own but this is an opportunity to see what it is you need and what you’re randomly holding onto. Will you really need that empty iPhone box ever again? Or what about those college textbooks you haven’t touched since freshman year? Go through and get rid of anything that’s simply taking up space without a purpose. That will help you begin your journey on achieving a minimalist bedroom.

2. Simple Bed Frame

Next up is the bedframe. Since you’re downsizing everything else your minimalist bed frame will be the center of attention. Find a simple bedframe, metal is usually the best option. That way the headboard and baseboard won’t be overwhelming.

3. No Headboard At All

Alternatively you could choose not to have a bed frame at all. Just have a basic bed frame. That way your line of vision is cleared up when you scan your minimalist bedroom, allowing you to add more things if you would want to.

4. Neutral Colors

When it comes to bed sets lean towards ones that come in solid, neutral colors. White or off white tends to be the more popular colors when it comes to minimalist bed sets.

5. Simple Mirror

In a minimalist bedroom light is going to be your best friend, that means you’re going to want to utilize it as much as you can. If you don’t have that much light consider buying a minimalist mirror, like the one below. It will open up your space and it serves a purpose beyond decor.

6. Limit The Wall Decor

Speaking of wall decor, you’re going to want to limit what you put on the wall. Walls with a bunch of random items hung on it will look out of place in your new minimalist bedroom. Also it’s best if you find wall decor that’s similar in theme or color.

7. Paint It Grey

If you do want to add a little something to your walls consider painting one or all of your walls grey. While you might think that it will darken your room there are icier greys that will make your room look clean and sleek.

8. Matching Bed Decor

Your minimalist bed set doesn’t have to be bareboned. If you like plush pillows there’s no reason you can’t have them, just find some that fit in with what’s already on your bed.

9. Interesting Lighting

This suggestion can be hard to achieve if you are renting or aren’t well versed in home projects but if you can you should consider putting in interesting lighting. The light fixture below isn’t just used for light, it’s pretty much a piece of art.

10. Unique Way To Store Things

Geometric shapes are perfect for a minimalist bedroom. These shelves are different than what you’d see in a typical bedroom. Still they are very simple and don’t take away from the space.

11. Sheer Curtains

Leave those blackout curtains at the dorms. Instead invest in some sheer curtains like the ones below. This way light can always come into the room. Plus hanging the curtains slightly higher than the actual window will make the space look larger.

12. Add Plants

Plants are your friends when it comes to minimalist bedrooms. They instantly brighten up a space and breath life into a very simple room. You can have a few or many. Just make sure they don’t turn into a jungle.

13. Black Bedding

If white bedding makes you nervous you can always go with black bedding. The one below is great because it has a variety of colors in it. Adding dimension to your room.

14. Be Smart About Your Space

If you live in a small space it can seem impossible to have a minimalist bedroom but that doesn’t have to be the case. Realistically you might need to store a decent amount of things in your room, and that’s fine. Just be smart about your space. Don’t pile a bunch of things into a corner, and stay tidy.

15. Limit How Many Dressers You Have

This tip is easier after going through a bedroom purge. If you put too many dressers in your room it will quickly go from a minimalist bedroom to a furniture store. Ideally you should have one dresser.

16. Be Picky About What You Put Up

Don’t hang up and show off just anything. Pick and choose what you want displayed in your room. Also be sure to arrange it nicely, don’t just throw things on a shelf.

17. Make Your Computer Art

This clock computer screensaver is pretty popular and it’s also a perfect pop of decor. When you’re not using your computer have it come on and instantly you have a chic clock on your desk.

18. Downsize Your Desk

Speaking of desks you’re going to want to downsize that as well. It might be tempting to have an office worthy desk in your room but that just takes up too much space. Limit what you have on your desk and don’t use it as extra storage space. That will also help you get work done.

19. Turn Your Clothes Into Decor

If you have to store your clothes out in your room turn it into decor. Put your shoes on floating shelves, like the ones below. It will help you not only see what you own but it shows off your style.

20. Match Furniture

Be sure your furniture matches. You don’t have to buy full bedroom sets, that can get expensive. But if you have a black bed frame it would be smart to buy a black desk and a black wardrobe. That way it all fits together and looks like you thought about how you wanted your minimalist bedroom to look as opposed to just randomly threw furniture in a room.

21. Make Everything Look Good

You might have to have things in your room that aren’t exactly cute, like a trash can or a hamper. If that’s the case that doesn’t mean you have to go with the same basic and boring items. Look for items that will match with the rest of the decor, that way people won’t even notice them.

22. Turn Your Collections Into Decor

When you declutter that doesn’t mean you have to get rid of everything. If you have a collection of books, albums, or magazines you can turn that into decor. Store them to where they look less like books and more like chic decor.

23. Add Some Color

Having a minimalist bedroom also doesn’t mean everything has to be grey, black or white. You can definitely add color, just be smart about it. Be consistent with your pops of color and limit it.

24. Utilize The Space You Have

You will also want to make use of inch of space you have of storage. It’s a bedroom, you’re going to need things. Except that doesn’t mean you need clutter. Organize your items, like in the tray below.

25. Basic Nightstand

Last but certainly not least is to find a good, minimalist nightstand. You don’t want something big and bulky. Finding something that takes up little space is the best option.
