There comes a time in life when you’re closet is overflowing and opening it becomes a dangerous activity. If you’re facing that problem these are the best tips on how to clear out your closet the right way!
If you haven’t seen the Netflix series ‘Tidying Up’ by now honestly where have you been, but there is one great method from it that Kondo recommends when cleaning out your space and that it to ask yourself with every item “does this give me joy?”, if yes and you love the item no matter what anyone thinks of it then keep it! But if not, you don’t really need it in your closet.
If you’re like me and you have A LOT of clothes this is a great way to make sure you don’t end up throwing out anything you like and overall making it a more practical way to clean up. I would recommend making a ‘keep’, ‘bin’, ‘donate’ and ‘sell’ pile to help you remove items in an organised way that’ll save you a lot of time in the future.
There are so many better things to do with your old clothes than simply put them in the bin. Sure, maybe that pair of old pants with about nine different holes in them belongs in the trash, but if you have a nice item that you just don’t wear anymore, it’s better to donate it to a charity shop or if you want, try to sell it on Depop or eBay and get some money out of your old clothes.
If you haven’t worn a pair of shoes in about five years (I had a few pairs of these) then it’s probably time to say goodbye. Once you’ve decided what shoes you will and won’t keep you can organise them neatly on a rack or shelf specifically dedicated to your shoes.
If your closet is still packed to the brim after clearing out there are other great storage items that you can buy that’ll help you organise. You’ll find hundreds of baskets and spare draws in any home-based store and you can store these easily under your bed or at the bottom of your closet if there’s room.
You can buy these mini pillows that are scented to put in your drawers if you want to make your whole wardrobe smell incredible. You can find these on Amazon or usually in any furniture store and they add a nice touch to your newly cleaned and refined closet!
If you don’t have something to entertain you as you sort chances are you’ll give up halfway through and end up with half a pile of clothes neatly folded in your draws and half a pile of clothing chucked randomly on your floor. I’d recommend watching Queer Eye on Netflix as you sort, something about watching makeovers will make you feel really productive.
While you’re reorganising you might as well give your closet a good scrub down in the process. My closet was covered in dust until I cleaned it out so make sure you don’t forget to skip this step!
