Hats You Absolutely Need To Have In Your Wardrobe

Hats are one of the most underrated yet necessary components to any wardrobe. They live in the world between being a cute hair accessory, a means of keeping one’s head warm, providing shade from harsh sunlight, adding personality to an outfit, or providing general wackiness to a night out. Here’s a list of five hats you might not have considered buying but will be a welcome addition to any wardrobe!

1. The Train Conductor Hat!

I have been waiting for years for these to come back into style, and the time has finally arrived! The train conductor hat may still have a bad rep as seeming childish or outdated, but it can really add a cute, chic, and approachable element to any outfit. Personally, I prefer to wear it in the fall and winter where it can be surrounded by dark and warm colors, scarves, coats, and boots. The train conductor hat can’t necessarily be relied on to keep one’s head warm, but that can be convenient in the summer, as it can still be worn in sunnier weather. Being confident is key with this one! Since it’s a bit more uncommon to see these out in the street, confidence will enhance your look as a whole, and make people believe any ordinary street has turned into your personal runway. Getting one of these hats in either a neutral or more daring and bold color is sure to complement an array of outfit choices, as well as strike up a fun conversation between friends.

2. The Classic Baseball Cap!

Most of us probably already own one of these. They usually tend to come as souvenirs or gifts on school trips, sports games, amusement parks, or something of that nature. The classic baseball cap is extremely practical in design, being small and portable while also committed to truly and effectively blocking out any harsh sunlight. They’re typically adjustable too, which makes them easy to buy anywhere and apt for any head shape and size (or even just really cool to slip your ponytail into). What we don’t usually consider, however, is how this simple cap can really take both one’s wardrobe and personality appearances to the next level. Getting a baseball cap that’s personalized, purchased from a memorable place, is merchandise from your favorite artist, or was a gift from a loved one, not only adds a pop of color and style to your outfit but also serves as a fun conversation topic and a public visualization of one’s personal background or interests. They’re basically the graphic tees of the hat world. Fun, classic, and unique to every individual’s interests and preferences!

3. Beanies, Beanies, Beanies!

As someone who recently moved from somewhere with very warm climates, to somewhere with freezing winters, I’ve recently been thrown headfirst into a full appreciation for a good beanie. I’ve incorporated three different beanies into my wardrobe now, and they all serve different purposes, both in terms of stylistic advantages as well as those of warmth and comfort. One is sleeker and fits in my bag in case of an emergency, and is in a bolder pink color. The other two are made of thicker material and in neutral colors that pair well with any of my larger winter coats, keeping me warm and toasty all day long.  It’s really good to invest in a quality beanie that goes over your ears! That way, your head area is protected from strong gusts of wind as well as below freezing temperatures. A good beanie, especially in cities where large amounts of walking are necessary, can really be a game-changer.

4. Bucket Hats!

During a Spring Break road trip with my friends this past month, we discovered our mutual love of bucket hats. I had one lying around and brought it with me to pair with a few of my outfits. Before I knew it, that hat was being passed around the three of us every day as we posed for pictures. We would have fun and hilarious little fights about whose turn it was to wear the bucket hat and by the end of the trip, we were all looking for where to purchase individual ones in different patterns and materials. The bucket hat is perfect for the spring and summer months, and can be paired with dresses, jeans, swimsuits- you name it! The color and pattern of the hat don’t necessarily have to match up with the rest of the outfit as simply being part of the look provides coordination. It’s a quick and easy way to really make it seem as if a lot of effort was put into one’s wardrobe. The bucket hat is the true definition of a ‘just throw on a hat!’

5. A Guilty Pleasure Hat!

It’s probably clear by now that I’m a huge hat enthusiast. They constantly surprise me by being able to change around moods and appearances alike. For birthday parties, I love getting colorful party hats for my friends to wear. In winter times, I never show up to any holiday party without some sort of accessory resting on top of my head. Because of this, I’ve acquired lots of ‘Guilty Pleasure Hats,’ and I think you should too! A guilty pleasure hat can be anything, as long as it’s slightly out of your comfort zone and slightly ridiculous. My personal favorite is a bright pink cowboy hat with a crown on it that I use on nights out with my friends as we roam around the city. Get yourself something silly. Visors, sun hats, fedoras, berets- they’re all valid! It might be a little daunting to wear it out and about at first, but grab your best friend and you’ll soon be laughing throughout the whole ordeal. It adds personality to your night out and ensures you take lots of pictures as you will want to remember this hilarious moment.
