15 Halloween Costumes That Perfectly Describe 2020

Halloween is the perfect time to celebrate or poke fun at the most popular cultural trends of the year. Here are some Halloween costumes that flawlessly epitomize 2020.

1. The Formal Apology

Many public apologies have been casually thrown around this year — plenty of mistakes and plenty of amends to be made. Dressing up as a formal apology may just perfectly describe social media in 2020.

Wear your fanciest formal dress or suit. Get a white sash and write ‘apology’ or ‘sorry’ across it. Voilà — your look is complete.

2. A Blessing in Disguise

Could the year 2020 be a blessing in disguise? It sure does not seem like it, but you never know. If you’d like to put a positive spin on the year, this costume could be right for you.

If you want to sport this look on Halloween, find funny or corny ‘disguise’ wear and a t-shirt that says ‘blessing.’ You can either make your own shirt or buy one here. Get a little goofy with it! (Or should I say Mickey.)

3. A Representation of the 2020 College Experience

Despite the lockdown, universities, colleges, and schools pressed on (online, that is.) If you are a Zoom 2020 graduate, this may be the perfect costume for you!

Keep it simple and get the shirt below or get creative and make your own!

4. A Nurse or Doctor

Pay homage to essential frontline workers by dressing up as a nurse or doctor. Include an appreciation sign on your costume giving thanks to all essential workers for their services.

Other frontline workers you can dress up as include grocery store workers, RNAs, cleaners, truck drivers, funeral workers, and many, many more.

5. Social (Distancing) Butterfly

A twist on a classic punny costume, a ‘social distancing’ butterfly is the perfect Halloween costume for 2020. Make sure to include a sign that says ‘stay six feet away’ and, of course, wear a face mask.

6. Joe Exotic from Tiger King

Anything Tiger King related will definitely be popular this Halloween. Hop on the bandwagon and dress up as Joe Exotic himself! To properly pull off the look you will need a few essential accessories: a long blond wig (get it here), a fake mustache (get it here), a sequined blazer (get it here), and your very own pet tiger (get it here.) Also, wear some small silver hoop earrings for an extra ‘exotic’ touch.

7. A Professional Work From Home Outfit

Professional on top, not so much below — that’s the official style of 2020. Wear your favorite blazer and a button-down shirt with a pair of raggedy looking sweatpants or boxers to achieve global pandemic business chic. Also, make sure to carry around work from home mug to complete the look.

8. A Roll of Toilet Paper

Ah, how hard toilet paper is to come by these days. Remember #toiletpapergate2020? I’m pretty sure we all do…I mean, it happened only a few months ago.

You can get creative and wear actual rolls of toilet paper (but be careful with how many you purchase, you don’t want to reignite the shortage) or keep it simple and get a t-shirt with a picture of toilet paper on the front (like the shirt below.) If you want to dress as a giant toilet paper roll, there will be plenty of costume companies creating their own giant toilet paper roll outfits as Halloween draws near.

9. When Life Gives You Lemons…

Make lemonade? The first part of this popular saying — when life gives you lemons — captures 2020 perfectly. There are many ‘lemons’ to be found all around this year. Also, it makes for a dang cute costume.

Whatever your beverage of choice in 2020 was, it’s time to honor it. We all have indulgences that get us through those long days where we’re trapped in our homes or apartments with nothing to do but confront our inner demons and crushing insecurities. So… make a costume out of it!

Are you just feeling a little lost? If so, a white rabbit, Alice, or Mad Hatter costume is the right choice for you.

The chaotic mayhem of Wonderland basically epitomizes the entirety of 2020 thus far. Also, bunny ears are cute — and the costume is pretty easy to throw together last minute. You know… if you’re late for a very important date.

Hamilton: the award-winning Broadway musical sweeping the nation. Ever since it was released as a full-length movie musical in July, Hamilton is once again all the rage — even more so than before. Dress up as the ten-dollar founding father himself this Halloween!
