Grand Valley State University is the home to around 25,000 students, and all students have developed similar experiences when it comes to life in Allendale. Being a Laker has brought many amazing experiences and life friends, but amongst the friendships, stressful classes, and the dorms are the things that happen every day that bring out what it truly means to be a Laker. 1. Spending Debit-Dollars.

Debit Dollars come with ones meal plan. You can get different amounts per plan, but no matter how much money you have, you are going to FLY through them. Be careful when going through those debit dollars because before you know it you have spent them all!

2. Trying to get on the bus.

You run to catch the bus and hope that the bus driver might wait for you. I mean, he just closed the door! You were very wrong. On campus, the bus drivers are on a mission and they tend to not really stop for anyone.

3. Procrastination- Nation.

“I am going to be productive today.” is something almost every Laker wakes up thinking. You keep telling yourself that fellow Laker. As they say “Due tomorrow” = “Do tomorrow.” Just make sure you actually get it done!

4. Getting the notification that a class is cancelled.

No better feeling than waking up one morning and getting a notification that your 9 AM is cancelled and you can go hop right into bed until your next class.

5. Walking into the wrong classroom.

This is something almost everyone will do at least one time here at Grand Valley, especially in Mackinac hall. Whether it being the first day of the semester, or towards the middle. It happens to the best of us and it’s just something you have to accept.

6. Seeing a dog on campus and your insides melt of happiness.

Something that most people underestimate is how much you miss your own dog or just seeing dogs quite often. There is nothing better than when dogs are in Kirkhoff for animal therapy before exams. If you’re lucky, you will see them walking on campus as well.

7. Checking Blackboard:

Nothing can bring more stress and anxiety than checking Blackboard. Blackboard posts grades and assignments and is one of the thing’s that brings you the most stress. Opening the website and seeing that red notification in the top right corner can cause instant anxiety.

8. Trying not to freak out figuring out the printers at GV.

Grand Valley has a limited amount of printers on campus and there is an 87% chance that none of them are working. It tends to bring out large amounts of frustrations.

9. When you are asked why you didn’t shower.

Sometimes you just don’t have time or you don’t feel like it. One of the amazing things about college is that NOBODY CARES. You can go to class and rock your sweatpants. If you get self-conscious there is an easy fix: put on a hat! You will learn that hats are life savers.

10. Waking up in the morning is hard.

Thoughts that go through almost every college students mind in the morning: “Would it be THAT bad if I skipped?” “I NEED to go to bed early tonight” No matter how many times you tell yourself that you are going to go to bed early that night, you most likely will not be.
