There are many sports teams at Ole Miss that don’t get as much love as football, but all students can get into these games and tournaments for free with their student ID. If you ever feel like you want to get out of the dorm and do something, going to a volleyball or a basketball game at the Pavilion is the perfect solution!
Museums are a great way to spend your day if you want a relaxing day. Luckily for us students, there is a museum within walking distance of campus. The University of Mississippi Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The majority of the exhibits are free to the public, but UM students get free admission to all exhibitions!
This museum is located inside of the former house of Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar who was a distinguished statesman in Mississippi in the 19th century. The Oxford-Lafayette County Heritage Foundation saved the neglected home and completed a full restoration in May 2008. They then made the house into a museum which is free to the public Friday through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Oxford is a historic town, so it is amazing to be able to go to the museums all located in Oxford and see the history that is contained inside.
If you’re in the mood for a hike or a run, then the Thacker Mountain Rail-Trail is a good place. There is a main path and then there are smaller paths coming from it. It is a peaceful trail that is popular with many people. If you like spending time outdoors, then this will be your go to out of the free things to do around Ole Miss!
Just like the name suggests, Lamar Park is a park that is perfect for a chill day just laying around, reading a book, or walking on a trail. The park is intended for people to come in and just enjoy themselves in a peaceful environment. It has to be one of the best free things to do around Ole Miss!
I know, I know, the library is on campus and to most it is nothing special because we study in there, but libraries are my favorite places to be, so I had to put it on the list. If you love to read, then a library is the best place for you and J.D. Williams Library is filled with so many books to read. The library is open until 2 a.m. on most days, so you can read a good book for hours before it closes!
This is definitely not the most exciting suggestion, but The Square is a great place to walk around during the day and kill some time. You can go into the stores that are located all around The Square and window shop, which I know isn’t as fun as real shopping, but it’ll do.
Saint Peter’s Cemetery is the final resting place of the famous novelist, William Faulkner. It is also home to many of Oxford’s other prominent citizens. Everyone that comes to Oxford has to visit Faulkner’s grave at least once, so why not check it off of your bucket list?
To the south of Tad Smith Coliseum is where the Confederate Cemetery is located. In this cemetery lies many Confederate soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. This is just another example of historic Oxford.
This historic house was built 1859 by William Turner. It was moved a little over 2 miles from its original location to survive the business development. This is a great place to tour and spend a few hours of your day when you are bored.
