10 Fun Things to Do During Summer Vacation at KSU

Spending your summer vacation at KSU? Not sure what you’re going to do? Keep reading for the top 10 fun things to do during your time spent at KSU this summer!

1. Explore your town!

During the non-summer months, we spend a lot of time going from Point A to Point B and all the errands in between. We go to our favorite stores and tend to stick to the normal routine. The summertime is perfect because things slow down a bit and with many people taking staycations, it provides a perfect opportunity to explore your town’s local history and perhaps check out places that are off the beaten path. Manhattan has a lot of local history to explore.

2. Get some exercise and fresh air by taking a hike on the Konza Prairie Trail!

The Konza Prairie Trail is a great place to start to hike, go for a walk, and just enjoy the beauty of nature. Getting outdoor air after months of being cooped in from cold winter weather and unpredictable spring rains helps you to feel more revitalized and refreshed. 3. Listen to some music outside at an outdoor concert!

Manhattan offers Arts in the Park, a summer long concert series in City Park every Friday. They have a lot of good bands and it is an enjoyable experience for all ages. For the schedule and bands playing visit this page!

4. Catch up with friends and family you haven’t talked to in a while.

One of the best ways I find to make the most of the summer is to spend time with family and friends. Catch up with family you haven’t seen in a while or good friends you wish to reconnect with and see how things are going. Sometimes life gets us really busy 9 months out of the year, making the summertime a perfect way to connect.

5. Get in touch with your inner food critic and try some delicious new dishes.

There a lot of different ethnic food places in Manhattan to try. There is the Dancing Ganesha in Aggieville, Baan Thai, Cafe Du Qvondeyz On the Garret, and loads more. Step outside your comfort zone and try a new food experience.

6. Let loose and act like a kid again.

It’s college summer vacation. Just have fun and leave all the “adult-ting” at the door. Go to a water park and go on the fun slides. Play board games with friends or family. Set up a re-creation of a summer camp and roast marshmallows and sing silly campfire songs. (Maybe with a bottle of wine?) RELAX.

7. Be sure to capture the moment and take a lot of pictures!

Real pictures! As in photographs you can hold and frame, not just throwing something on your Insta feed. Make it a point to take pictures of all of your adventures this summer and put them in a scrapbook. Though you should be living in the moment during these adventures, having a photo memory book is a great way to preserve those memories and to have them to look back on. Taking pictures of some of the previously mentioned ways would be a great start! I highly recommend Project Life for making scrapbooks. You can find out more information here. There is even a Project Life App for iPhone and Android for those of you too scared to part with your phone.

8. Get your hands dirty in a garden project!

One of the best things about summer is the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. They taste even better when you grow them yourself. Also, it is said that being outside and getting your hands in the soil can prolong your life and is an overall health benefit. Manhattan Public Library has a few leaflets on growing vegetables that you can pick up for free as well as a wide variety of gardening books. Nothing tastes better than something you have grown fresh from your garden, and you can work on your tan while you garden!

9. Finally get around to learning or practicing something that interests you!

Always wanted to learn French or master that tricky yoga pose? You can use this time during summer to learn something you have always wanted to, without having to worry about studying and attending your regular academic classes. Since it will be something that interests you, it will not feel boring or uninteresting to practice and study. You could learn another language, start a book club, try a new exercise class, the possibilities are endless!

10. Force yourself to relax.

Summer can bring about a lot of opportunities to just sit outside and enjoy life. Use a hammock to relax with a book or just listen to the birds chirping. Sometimes the best way to make the most of your summer is to do absolutely nothing. Nowadays, in this fast-paced world, we forget to just take time for ourselves. Sometimes we need to legitimately force ourselves to relax. But once you learn how, it will feel so great!
