Pencil skirts are a wardrobe essential. You can wear them for pretty much any occasion. Dress them up with a button-down blouse or chambray and cardigan for work, or dress them down with a crew neck sweatshirt or windbreaker. Here’s a quick DIY on how to make your very own pencil skirt using fabric (something strong, I’ve seen a lot of people recommend a jersey material so it fits well), matching thread color, scissors, sewing machine, elastic, and pins.
I’ve even seen a couple tutorials of people making their pencil skirts from an old t-shirt, in which case if there is an old t-shirt you’d like to change into a skirt, just switch that in for the fabric.
If you want an elastic waistband, first fold your elastic in half. Then, measure your waist, and cut the elastic so that it’s 1 inch longer than your measurement.
Now fold your fabric over, and measure out how long you want your skirt to be on your body. Use that length to cut out your skirt, using the same width that you did for the elastic.
For this step, you want to the skirt to be inside out. If you’re using a plain fabric and not one with a pattern, then this won’t matter as much. Pin the edges together.
Sew the edges together, and cut and iron the seam down.
Pin the elastic band to the right side of the skirt, so that it will be on the outside. It should be the same size as your skirt.
Sew the elastic on and flip your skirt so the right side is out. Simply hem the bottom, and you have a finished pencil skirt!
