10 Decor Ideas For Your College Apartment

There’s nothing more exciting than that feeling when you finally move out from that tiny college dorm and into your very own apartment. You’re finally getting your first taste of freedom in college, away from the RAs and the campus rules and that messy roommate. But, with that freedom comes responsibility. A responsibility to decorate that is! Check out this list of decor ideas for college apartments that will have the place feeling like home in no time!

1. Area rug

If your apartment is feeling a little drab and cold, warm it up with a cozy area rug! This will give your living room space lots more texture and color and you can match it to the rest of your furniture pieces. It will also be super soft to walk on, sit on, or even take a nap on! Apartment flooring isn’t always the nicest, so cover it up with a stylish and comfortable rug!

2. Throw pillows

Next on our list of decor ideas for college might not exactly be a huge secret, but it truly changes the entire aesthetic of your apartment. If your apartment already comes with furniture, it may be that you’re stuck with a not-so-pretty couch, so use some throw pillows to hide the parts you don’t wanna see! They will also make hanging out on the couch ten times more comfortable, and will surely brighten up the room.

3. A fun doormat

First impressions can mean a lot sometimes, so why not take that into consideration with your apartment too? Having a funny or cute doormat will certainly make a statement before someone even walks into your apartment, plus it’s just plain cute. You’ll have people smiling before they even come inside, and who wouldn’t want that? Pick out a doormat that represents all of you and your roommates’ personalities and just have fun with this! Decor ideas for college don’t necessarily have to be inside your place!

4. Additional lighting

Next on our list of decor ideas for college apartments is some additional lighting! No one, and I mean no one, likes that harsh hospital room-like lighting that comes with college dorms and apartments. It’s bright and unwelcoming, and who wants to live like that? Luckily, there is a solution when it comes to lighting, and that is to just bring your own! Turn off those harsh lights and turn on some string lights, a funky lamp, or anything you like! If string lights aren’t really your thing, mix them up with these vine curtains like pictured below!

5. Wall art

You’re not living unless your walls are covered in aesthetically pleasing or just plain pretty wall art. Of course, not everyone has the same taste in decor, so it’s really up to you, but I highly suggest hanging up some fun prints or frames that showcase your personality. Match the colors of the art to your other furniture colors and hang up some fairy lights to emphasize your art. Plus, the options when it comes to wall art are truly endless, depending on your style!

6. Extra seating

From what I’ve experienced so far, college apartments aren’t usually the biggest. You might have a medium-sized couch and maybe a chair in your living room, but that won’t be able to fit that many people all at once. So, a great solution to this is getting some extra seating, preferably something that’s small, portable, and easy to store. A great option for this is a folding butterfly chair like pictured below, or you could even buy an ottoman that could double as seating and storage. This way, you can invite friends over without feeling bad about not having enough places to sit!

7. A coffee bar

You can’t forget to add some decor in your kitchen because you’ll probably be spending lots of time in there. If you’re a coffee addict like any college student is, then this coffee bar is a must-have for your apartment. You can go as simple or complex with the decorations as you like, but whatever you create will surely be great. This is a great thing to have whether you’re always on the go, or you just want to relax in your apartment with a nice cup of coffee. If you’re worried about taking up counter space, you could buy a bar cart and transform it into a coffee cart!

8. Over the toilet storage

Like almost everything else, the bathroom in a college apartment is never very big. Less room means less storage space, which can be a big problem if you’re sharing a bathroom with roommates. A great solution to this problem is an over the toilet storage shelf! This allows you to store anything that might not have a permanent place, or you could use it to add some decor pieces to your bathroom. You could add a candle, and nice plant, or anything you want!

9. Key hanger

When you’re in college, you probably have a lot of keys to keep track of, whether it be your car keys, your room key, your meal card pass, etc. This next decor item is a great way for everyone in your apartment to stay organized and keep track of their keys, plus it looks super cute. There are lots of different styles out there when it comes to key hangers, so find one that suits you and your roommates’ styles the best and hang it up by your front door!

10. Message board

Since you and your roommates are probably all on different schedules during the week, it’s important to keep each other updated. A simple and fun way to do this is to have a message board in your living room or kitchen in a place where everyone will read it! Write silly notes to each other, hang up some tasty recipes, or remind them that rent is due next week. This is a fun way to stay connected to your roommates especially when college life gets hectic! Finding decor ideas for college apartments doesn’t have to be complicated!
