1. Layers, layers, layers!

This is a fashion trend found everywhere in terms of Connecticut College Street Style! I know the weather is getting warmer, but there are still cool days in New England and even cooler evenings. Layers are versatile, universally flattering, and a staple of spring – it probably has something to do with how the temperature can change at a moment’s notice.  Whatever the reason, it’s a perfect excuse to rock your favorite cardigans, open-front tunics, scarves, flannels, and lightweight jackets with confidence.

TRY IT: There’s nothing wrong with rocking the classic cable-knit look, but if you really want to be on the cutting edge of this trend, try a silky kimono tunic with a colorful floral print.

2. Earth-toned colors.

Who says you can only wear pastels when it gets warm?  Oranges with gold undertones, muted crimsons, warm grays, mossy forest greens, raw ochres, and other earthy neutrals are the colors for the season and give any outfit a laid-back, bohemian edge.

TRY IT: Too many dark earth tones tend to look blah when flowers are in bloom.  Wear lighter (or brighter!) pieces to balance things out – if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, go for pieces that are the same shade but have different saturations for an eye-popping effect. Moreover, since these colors are so intrinsically linked to bohemia, any prints or accents associated with that style look really, really good here, too.

3. Floralia/Coachella vibes.

Inspired by the aesthetic of Conn’s annual music festival, the Floralia look has been described as “Coachella without the cultural appropriation.”  Airy sundresses, paisleys, fringe, crocheted lace accents, and bursts of color are all key to this look, which draws inspiration from bohemian trends and exotic tropical locales.

TRY IT:  Vintage is the name of the game here – rather than going to your closest mall, try going to a local Goodwill or thrift shop for one-of-a kind pieces.  You might be surprised by just how much buried treasure is there if you’re willing to look.

4. #TBT to the 90s!

Move over, ‘80s – it’s the ‘90s time to shine! There always seems to be nostalgia for the trends of yesteryear, and this year ‘90s fashion is coming back in a big way.  Plaid button-downs with jean cutoffs and combat boots evoke the apex of the grunge movement, while crop tops, mixed prints, denim ensembles, overalls, and boyfriend jeans all reflect the sensibilities of the era.

TRY IT:  Even something as simple (and subtle) as a t-shirt featuring your favorite ‘90s cartoon, band or movie can evoke serious nostalgia.  Dress it up with a stylish jacket, skinny jeans, and heels or keep things casual with a pair of cutoffs and Converse – it’s up to you!
