Best Books Everyone Should Read Freshman Year

Nothing gets me down more than having to read pages upon pages of text that I don’t care much about. Welcome to college life. Not to mention the fact that I have even less time now to read the books I really want to read. Don’t worry! Here are some books to get you back into the swing of reading what you want to read. #treatyoself. Seriously, these are the best books everyone should read.

1. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

This is a classic read about a girl, Cath, who enters her first year of college at University of Nebraska with her twin sister. Yet her twin doesn’t want to room together and ditches her all together. Cath has to go in blind and navigate her first year all alone while still trying to finish her fanfic of Simon Snow before the 8th book releases. The pressure is on.

Amazon, $13.34

2. This is Really Happening by Erin Chack

Senior Writer for Buzzfeed Erin Chack gets real as she chronicles parts of her life in a series of essays in this book. From tales of meeting her best friend on a study abroad to being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 19, Chack’s stories are ones that every college girl will be thinking “YES! ME TOO!”

Amazon, $10.55

3. I Hate Everyone but You by Gaby Dunn and Allison Raskin

The story of two best friends trying to figure out how to remain friends while on opposite coasts during their freshman year of college is something I’m sure everyone can relate to. Even if your bestie isn’t that far away, you two still have times where it may seem like 13 hours when it’s only 13 minutes. If Ava and Gen don’t have you thinking of texting your girl, I don’t know what will.

Amazon, $14.96

4. Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay

Not all nonfiction is boring! Take a detour into the real world with Roxane Gay as she discusses issues of race, representation of women in literature, and rape culture in her series of essays. Through compelling writing, Gay opens up and draws attention to many things you wouldn’t have thought of before. By far one of the most popular books out there right now. It’s no wonder it made my list of best books everyone should read.

After years of watching their lives unravel from their war-torn country, Mariam and Laila are brought together in unforeseen circumstances. Told in four parts, these women will have you enraptured from the first turn of the page and hoping for them to prevail on the last.
