10 Beautiful Hairstyles for all That Curly Hair

I absolutely love my curly hair, but it can also be a nightmare to manage.

It’s hard enough as it is managing one good hair day, especially when the weather wants to turn your beautiful head of hair into a giant, bloated bird’s nest!  But like my mother always said, “Beauty hurts.”, and you must work to maintain the beauty of those luscious curls!

Here’s a list of 10 beautiful hairstyles you can use to show off all that wonderful curly hair!

1. Natural Up-do

This classic hairstyle has saved me time and time again. It’s not only the best way to look chic in a matter of seconds, but you also won’t have to constantly worry about keeping up any sort of maintenance throughout the day. All you have to do is pull your hair back and tie it up into a neat bun. Don’t forget to smooth over the sides to keep away any frizz! The most efficient way of doing this would be to use hair cream, gel, or hair spray.

To have this look, pull your hair up using a scrunchie or hair elastic and create a high ponytail. Next, you wrap up your hair into a nice little bun at the top of your head – keep in mind that the tighter you wrap your bun, the less volume it will carry (use this technique to go for the look your most comfortable with). When your finished, secure the bun using bobby pins or tucking the loose parts into the elastic you used to hold it up.

2. Side Part

Another basic yet popularized style for us curly gals can be the simple side part we’ve all come to know and love. This amazing look will not only add more volume to your hair, but it will also make it easier to manage that unwanted frizz. It’s amazing what the difference a part can do to your hair! Sometimes it can feel like you’re an entirely different person!

To create this side look, all your doing is using the tail end or teeth of a fine comb to part away from the hair on the left or right side of your head. If you decided to do this while your hair is nice and dry, know that if not done carefully you can cause more frizz and even damage. I recommend you dampen and moisturize your hair with leave-in conditioner or hair cream to help reduce these unfortunate outcomes.

3. Half Up, Half Down

What’s unique about this curly style is that it’s perfect for those lazy hair days. Celebs have rocked this adorable look for decades, and now it can be your turn to rock this curly hairstyle!

Half up-dos are a great way to keep hair fancy without being too formal, however, to work around your curls finding the right products to use is an absolute must to keep everything under control. From high buns to simple braided twists, there are more ways the one to bring together a beautiful and volumized half up-do!

4. The Pineapple

For my curly girls with particularly shorter hair, the pineapple look just might be for you!

To pull off this look, you would need to pull your hair from the back to the top of your head while your curls fall forward, then you gather it up and tie it into a tight ponytail. It’s that easy! For thicker, kinkier hair, I would recommend that you use a headscarf or extra hairpins to keep your hair in place as an alternative to tightening your hair ties, reducing the risk of headaches or a sore scalp. You can also wear a hat bonnet depending on your preference.

It can take time perfecting this look for some, as most curls require a lot more attention and care to manage, but there are a variety of adjustments you can make to accommodate both your hair texture and length to shorten the amount of time spent putting together this fun do.

5. Full Bun, Bangs Out

Another unique up-do you may want to try is a full bun with a few strands of loose hair hanging out.

Similar to the beloved bedhead look we all adore, imperfect buns are something when done right, that can be refreshing and fun to style to have when hanging out with friends or attending a group study session. Like to the natural up-do, put up your hair in a high bun, but leave out one or two strands of hair to dangle freely. Of course, being that this is a curly hair look, we need to matte down the rest of our hair to make sure nothing else goes loose and being that this is a more simple look than others, using a soft brush to smooth over those imperfections before applying hair spray should do the trick.

6. Playful Side Ponytail

Ponytails are the easiest and most achievable looks that anyone can pull off. Working with curly hair, however, can prove this elegant yet casual style to be a bit of a challenge due to our naturally thick textures – but not impossible!

Of course, smoothing down your hair with oils and/or hair creams is necessary to reduce frizz and minimize tangles, and when your finished prepping all you have to do is brush your hair to either side and tie it together.

Leave your hair down naturally and show off those wonderful bouncing curls!

I know, I know – depending on the weather this can be considered a very risky move, however, there are products today that can thankfully put an end to your hair poofing worries!

Curly hair on its own can and will end up dry and frizzy if left untouched, but leaving in proper hydrating and nourishing conditioners will play a supporting role in keeping your hairdo styled and properly tamed throughout the day. Make sure that you also go through your hair with a comb ahead of time to get rid of any knotting or hidden tangles, that way when you want to pull it back or braid it up for the night it will take you less time to do so; doing this regularly can also help to prevent split ends.

Pulling back your free-flowing hair will prevent strands from getting in your face and flatten any stubborn baby hairs poking out. You can use headbands, hair wraps, accessorized clips, or even a hat.

8. 90’s Crown Twists

It may take some time perfecting this fun look, but I promise, your efforts will not be made to waste! You can style the crown of your head with flat, bold, or individual twists, giving your hair that wonderful extra volume.

Section strands of your curls into even parts before applying some slick gel or cream to each one individually (this method works best when you wash or dampen your hair in advance). Next, take one of your parted strands and carefully twist them into the hair closest to your scalp. Make sure your twists are tightly secured before moving on to your other strands.

9. Perfect Double Buns

This hairdo is a bit more on the playful side than most, but it is secure and holds itself together quite well during humid weather.

Part your hair down the middle to evenly separate both sections of hair. Next, you take either section and pull it up into a high ponytail, which can take 2 to 3 wraps using your hair tie, before finally wrapping it into a freshly neat bun. (I recommend that you use a soft brush to smooth down any loose hairs while doing this) You can either use hairpins to hold it up or simply tuck in the loose ends using extra hair ties. Repeat these steps on the other section.

As previously mentioned, dampening and moisturizing your hair will make working with it more flexible. And if you wish for more volume in your buns comb out or brush through your curls a few times to separate and thicken them.

10. Bantu Knots

Bantu Knots is both a hairstyle and a method used to redefine your curls.

To create them, you take portions of your hair and twist each of them up into secured knots on the top of your head – similar to how you would create a bun. If you leave them in overnight and decide to unravel them the following day, you will be given a new form of tight springy curls. An amazing perk to this ethnic new look is that you can obtain it without the use of heating utensils! So, if you ever have the urge to put a little more bounce in your already beautiful natural curls, you are absolutely going to adore this brilliant look!
