10 Articles Of Clothing That Every It-Girl Owns

Being an It-Girl is undefinable, yet we all know her when we see her. She’s got her shit together (or it at least looks like she does). She’s got a cup of coffee in one hand and the perfect purse in the other. Her style is effortlessly cool, and she always has something interesting to say. She is an It-Girl. Despite whether or not we have our lives together, we too can look like It-Girls by incorporating the must-have clothes that all It-Girls own into our own wardrobes. And if you fake it long enough, one day you’ll wake up with a coffee in one hand and your perfect purse in the other.

Must-Have #1: Leather or Denim Jacket

Denim and leather jackets are each so versatile that it’s no wonder they’re essential to every girl’s wardrobe. They can both be dressed up and dressed down, and they’re perfect for warm nights and chilly mornings. Another important aspect to an It-Girl’s wardrobe is how personal it is. Both leather and denim jackets can be personalized with pins, embroidery, and, best of all, time. The longer you wear it, the more perfect your jacket will become.

Must-Have #2: A Blazer

An It-Girl can easily transition from day to night (obviously she’s running from the office to a runway show for NYFW). In order to do so flawlessly, you need to incorporate articles of clothing into your wardrobe that can go from day time to evening wear with the change of a shoe. A simple blazer is the answer to this question. A blazer can be worn in the office, an interview, a presentation, but it can also be dressed up to be worn on a date or out to dinner. This can’t be stressed enough: the perfect pair of jeans is critical to any It-Girl’s lookbook. It doesn’t even matter what wash, what cut, what length these jeans are. As long as you feel sexy and your butt looks good, nothing else matters. Jeans are incredibly versatile, working for the office, your dinner date, and a trip to Target.

Must-Have #4: Boots – Combat or Otherwise

This may be a point of contention. Some fashionistas might suggest a perfect pair of nude pumps before they propose a pair of boots. And sure, pumps are an important addition to a wardrobe. But boots can be worn all seasons of the year, and they pack a serious fashion punch. They can be worn with jeans, a skirt and tights, and a dress. And, if you get the right brand and spend the money, you’ll get a pair of boots that will last and last, ensuring your It-Girl status all year round.

There’s definitely a trend emerging throughout this list about versatility. All the pieces of clothing thus far are extremely versatile, and that’s what makes them staples in any woman’s wardrobe. The same is true about the little black dress. The purpose of this dress is to be able to transition from day to night. You can wear it on a date, for girls’ night out, or, when paired with a blazer, to work. You might even be able to get away with wearing it to that wedding you’re dreading going to.

Must-Have #6: Trusty Sneakers

I’m not talking about workout sneakers, so leave your Nikes and your New Balances in your gym bag. Every It-Girl owns a pair of sneakers for those days when boots and heels just don’t work. Vans, Converse, and Adidas are all sneaker brands that have perfected the streetwear look.

Must-Have #7: Black Slacks

Black slacks are a must-have in every person’s wardrobe ever. Man, woman, corporate, artistic–everyone should own a pair of black slacks. They can be dressed up for an interview or a date, and they can be laidback and casual when paired with sneakers and a graphic tee. Black slacks can go with you from your 9-to-5 to your date with Mr. Right.

Denim jackets are great, don’t get me wrong. But at the end of the day, denim isn’t great at repelling water. So you need a jacket that can combat against all different types of weather. A trench is a classic silhouette, (usually) a classic color, and a coat with a belt can help accentuate your hourglass figure. Long or short, the trench is a great choice for any season.

Must-Have #9: A Favorite Blouse

Every It-Girl owns at least one blouse. Not just any blouse, but a make-your-boobs-look-great, this-is-my-favorite, I-love-this-color kinda blouse. This blouse can transition from day to night, and the minute you put it on it’s a confidence boost. You look great in it, and everyone knows it. Every It-Girl owns at least one of these blouses.

Must-Have #10: A Graphic Tee

As we come to number ten, there were a lot of contenders–the perfect flirty skirt, a sun dress, a plain white tee. But the graphic tee beat out all of those others articles of clothing. A graphic tee is perfect at number ten because a graphic tee can be paired with everything on this list. They look perfect under a leather jacket. Graphic tees can be worn with both slacks and jeans. And they obviously look perfectly casual with sneakers. Not only are they versatile, comfy, and usually cheap, they also say a little bit about you. Nowadays, graphic tees can show off your political preferences, your favorite band, or a cheeky little quote. (Also, as a side-note, guys are gonna look at your boobs, so you might as well give them something to read.)
