The Refinery Singapore

115 King George’s Avenue #01-02, Singapore 208561

Without a doubt, The Refinery is a restaurant and bar one must at least visit once. Located near Lavender MRT station, I must admit that I got a little lost looking for the place, as it’s in the midst of automobile workshops. The Refinery is a three-story oasis for people who love to eat, drink and create. It houses a trendy yakitori joint, a bespoke cocktail bar, and did I mention, a creative space and workshop for those itching to design and build. Even though The Refinery is known for its Japanese dishes, it does serve westernized dishes, such as the lobster roll and egg benedicts, as well. Let’s not forget, a meal isn’t complete with desserts. A must try? The Refinery Waffle. A tinge of sourness from the berries, together with the sweetness of the vanilla gelato? You’ve got a perfect match!

How can I forget that the restaurant has the cutest interior design, with characters like Hello Kitty, Doraemon and Pikachu, being pasted on one side of the wall? There are some truly unique food places in Singapore.

Strangers’ Reunion

33/35/37 Kampong Bahru Road Singapore 169354

Now, this is one café I’ve been visiting countless times over the years.
The name ‘Strangers’ Reunion’ is such a unique name! It just beckons to people to come in, have a cup of coffee and relax. No matter what company you’re in, you’re bound to have a great time in this café!

At Strangers’ Reunion, they strive to make the best coffee possible. It is home to the current World Siphon Coffee Champion and 3-time Singapore National Barista & Latte Art Champion. Besides its aromatic coffee, Strangers Reunion is also well-known for its buttery, drool-worthy waffles. My favourite food at the café would have to be the Japanese-Western fusion pasta, Aburi Mentaiko Spaghetti. So rich with flavours! If you’re a huge fan of Menatiko like I am, you have to give this dish a try!

New Station Snack Bar

14 Scotts Road, #05-95, Far East Plaza, Singapore 228213

Now if you’re not a local, you probably aren’t aware that Singapore is facing a ‘crisis’ at the moment: the Salted Egg Mania! I have a love-hate relationship with salted egg. Once I tasted it, I was obsessed! Needless to say, too much of something becomes detrimental.
If you’re in for some indulgence, the salted egg dishes at New Station Snack Bar are a must try! The salted egg is so flavoursome, it’s literally nothing I’ve ever tasted! I’ve brought family and friends to this eatery and without fail, they have gotten as hooked as I am.

Our favourite dishes are the salted egg york pork ribs and salted egg deep fried fish skin.
Of course, if you’re not into the whole salted egg craze, there are many other dishes which you can choose from in the menu.

Magnum Pleasure Store

ION Orchard #B2-07

For those pleasure seekers, Magnum has a newly opened store at Ion where customers get to customise their very own Magnum ice cream. This is the very first Magnum pleasure store opened in Singapore so I can understand the hype and craze. Their delicious ice cream is covered with a layer of chocolate luscious sauce. You can choose dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate. Furthermore, you get to choose your very own toppings! Customers will be spoilt for choices as there are 18 toppings, that include flower petals and chilli flakes!

Besides enjoying the decadent ice cream that Magnum has to offer, customers can also enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee. The store uses coffee beans which are exclusive to Magnum, chosen after sourcing through many local roasters.

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar

435 Orchard Road, #04-21 Wisma Atria Shopping Centre, Singapore 238877

This Japanese restaurant is well-known for its Shiok Maki. “Shiok” is a term that Singaporeans are familiar with, which means “awesome”. The restaurant serves the original with Unagi and avocado and the other is filled with fried ebi and wakame seaweed. The reason why customers are so obsessed with the Shiok Maki is due to the secret sauce the chef uses. It is a creamy mixture of cheese that reminds me of Mentaiko.

When I ate it for the very first time, it just made me want to exclaim, “Oishi!” You would definitely want to come back for more!

Whitegrass

30 Victoria St, #01-26/27, Chijmes, Singapore 187996

Whitegrass is chef-owner Sam Aisbett’s first restaurant venture, showcasing his distinctive and personal interpretation of modern Australian cuisine. The restaurant presents a contemporary fine dining experience at heritage-listed CHIJMES, one of Singapore’s most iconic locations.

I was very lucky to be able to talk to Sam. He brought out a dish which was specially made that day and was nice enough to share with me the key ingredients of the dish. It was more of a Japanese-styled Bibimbap, and tasted really superb! Sam is part of a new generation of Australian chefs who are transforming the notions of Modern Australian food with his flavor-driven approach to international ingredients with a distinctly Asian touch. The results? You get yourself a wonderful, unique and colorful meal, which you probably can’t find anywhere else in Singapore.

Some of the dishes ordered included the slow roasted young beetroots with smoked eel cream, rosella jam and Tasmanian pepper berry. Whitegrass is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion with your loved ones or friends.

d’Good Café

273 Holland Avenue #02-01/02

391 Orchard Road #B1-56 Takashimaya S.C., Ngee Ann City Singapore 238872

D’good café has two branches, one in Holland Village and the most recent one was opened in town at Takashimaya S.C. I first fell in love with the vibes of the branch located at Holland Village. Its garden theme was aesthetically pleasing, giving out an Alice In The Wonderland-kind-of-vibe. The one located in town, however, has a completely different layout. It has been designed to mimic the London Tube.

I would definitely say both branches are a must to visit at least once. Not only is it decorated beautifully and Instagram-worthy, but the food is drool-worthy. I can guarantee that you will have a fabulous time at either one of the d’Good cafes.

Ash & Char

21 McCallum St, Singapore 069047

Tanjong Pagar is well known for being a food paradise, with the streets filled with eateries and bars. Without a doubt, every night these places will be filled with food lovers, locals and tourists.

Ash & Char is one that has caught my eye. I visited on a Friday evening, and true enough, it was starting to get crowded. With the restaurant/bar located in the middle of office buildings, it’s not hard to see why it’s the go-to place to relax and rewind after an exhausting day at work. The open bar concept is the perfect place to enjoy a few drinks while people watching. The large windows and neutral colours make the whole place look bright and airy, and very welcoming. There is a great variety of food places in Singapore.

This is the perfect place to rewind with friends over a couple of drinks and some bar food, such as the mouth-watering nachos!

East Coast Lagoon Food Village

1220 East Coast Parkway, 468960

Now, if you want some really good and affordable local dishes, look no further! As a Singaporean, I am proud of our hawker heritage and the long history of different hawker centres spread all over Singapore. Opened in 1977, East Coast Lagoon Food Village is filled with a wide variety of some of our favourite local delights, such as satay, fried oyster omelet, barbequed stingray and our well-known chilli/black pepper crab.

With over 60 stores, you will be spoilt for choices!

Bread Street Kitchen Singapore

Located in: The Shoppes
Address: 2 Bayfront Avenue, 01 – 81 The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, 018956

I have saved my personal favourite of the food places in Singapore for the last. This modern restaurant is one of the many owned by Gordon Ramsay. I’m pretty sure most food lovers out there know who Gordon Ramsay is. If not, which rock have you been hiding under? At Bread Street Kitchen, sophistication meets casual dining. It is where vintage blends perfectly with modern.

The staff is warm and friendly the minute you step in. The interior is decorated with lush furniture, and it gives a home-away-from-home vibe. The real experience is the food! One bite and you’ll know why this restaurant is such a hit with locals and tourists. The succulent pork belly is so juicy! Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. And the foie gras…Mama Mia! Not only is the price affordable, but the portion is generous.

I recommend ordering a glass of their house special Moscato. Sadly, the restaurant does not sell it in bottles. The sweet sparkling taste of the dessert wine is the perfect pairing with the food.
