Advice For How To Choose Between Two Colleges

Choosing between two colleges is probably one of the hardest things to do. I experienced this throughout the college decision process my senior year of  high school. When I was accepted into two of my top colleges, both of which I fell in love with right away, and I did not know what to do at all. I had to think about a lot of things because my future was at stake. I talked about this with my best friends and my family as well, but my choice would affect me more than anyone that I talked to. If you’re in the same spot and am in need of some advice, here are some things that I helped me choose between two colleges.

1.) Location

This was one of the first things that came to mind because there were a lot of questions that I asked myself. It’s one of the things that you’re parents are most likely considering as well. How far do I want to be from home? Do I love the campus? Do I feel at home? Would I feel safe here? In my experience, I felt at home when I visited both campuses. I loved the vibes I got and I pictured myself being happy on each campus.

2.) Finances

Definitely one of the big things that is to be considered is the finances. How much is the tuition? How much financial aid am I receiving? Am I going to graduate with a lot of debt? For me, the tuition from both colleges were about the same, but I looked at how much financial aid I was receiving from both and that helped a lot with making my choice.

3.) Friends

Sometimes this factor doesn’t affect a person, but for me it did. I knew that I wanted to be close enough to be able to visit my friends back home. And I wanted to be close enough for them to be able to visit me as well. Both schools were relatively close to home so this didn’t really effect me, but it might be effecting you. It’s never easy having to choose between two colleges.

4.) The Little Things

Say that your two choices appear to be basically the same. That’s what happened in my case, making my decision process slightly harder. So, what I did was compare and contrast everything the schools had to offer. Did the dorms have air conditioning? How is their recreational center? Did they offer any clubs that I would be interested in? Would I like the food choices in the dining halls? I literally thought about anything that would differentiate the schools.

So what did I choose between two colleges? Eventually, I ending up choosing my second choice school. So far, I’m not regretting my choice. Once I made my choice, I didn’t have any doubts about it. If all goes well, I hope that you are happy with whatever you end up choosing. It may be a long thought process, but it’s your future that’s on the line. So, think about which school would be beneficial for you, but also what would make you happy.
