No matter what type of college or university you go to, college athletic events have the opportunity to make a big impact on your 4 years there. Even if you’re clueless when it comes to sports, or have never even touched any kind of ball in your life, showing support for your college’s teams can improve your whole college experience. The fans are just as important as the athletes on the team. If you aren’t convinced, take a look at these 5 reasons you should attend your university’s athletic events.
1. The Tailgate
Regardless of the sport, students get together before the game to tailgate. These tailgates can start hours prior to the game and can occur in the stadium, parking lot, or arena. The anticipation and excitement for the game builds at these tailgates. Without tailgating, the mood wouldn’t be as exciting for the upcoming game and it’s definitely something every college student should experience at least once!
2. The After Party
After the game, whether it was a win or a loss, students will either be celebrating or commiserating in their misery, together. Just like tailgating, it’s incredibly exciting to be part of this atmosphere, where everyone feels an undeniable bond. Part of college is being able to socialize and have fun, and this is just the place to do it!
3. Meet Other Students
Because most of the student body attends these athletic events, they’re usually the biggest student gatherings on campus. It’s an awesome opportunity to meet new people and to bond over the team together. The student section offers a unique opportunity to be with other students who have a common interest with you and who are just as passionate as you about your team.
4. Networking Opportunities
I’m sure by now, all college students are sick of hearing about the importance of networking (I know I am). However, college sporting events offer the chance for amazing networking opportunities. Successful alumni often come back for games and it’s a great opportunity to meet them, especially since you can automatically have a connection (routing for the same team).
5. School Spirit
What better place is there to gain school spirit than with the majority of your student body packed in a stadium or an arena? You get a rush of pride for your school when they score a touchdown or make a huge basket, that can’t be matched with anything else on campus. Making these connections with your college will give you a team to cheer for long after you graduate.
