10 Ways to Spread Christmas Cheer

Sometimes we can lose sight of the reason for the season when finals and shopping stresses build. Check out these 10 ways to spread Christmas cheer!

As we get older, and with the looming stress of finals, sometimes we have trouble getting into that jolly Christmas mood. Since the holidays are right around the corner, each of us could probably use a gentle reminder of what the season is supposed to feel like. Here are 10 ways to get in the holiday spirit and spread that Christmas cheer (in case you forgot how)!

1. Go caroling.

Caroling is always a good way to spread Christmas cheer. It lets people know that you are excited about the holidays and you want to share it with everyone. Singing is contagious and once you start, others are going to want to join in, guaranteed. Even if you’re bad at singing, it’s still a great way to spread cheer. So breakout the cheesy holiday sweaters and get ready to sing some jingle bells, because it’ll truly bring a smile to others.

2. Make cookies for friends and neighbors.

Baking cookies is just fun in general, but during Christmas it can be a great way to spread some holiday cheer. Choose shapes such as Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and Santa Clause to really reign in that festive vibe. Presenting these yummy treats to your friends and neighbors lets them know that you are thinking of them during the holidays, which would brighten anyone’s day.

Decorating your house just screams Christmas spirit and ultimately, Christmas cheer. You know what they say about Christmas spirit – it’s infectious! By seeing your house decorated, others will want to decorate their house, too. Even if they don’t, at least they can appreciate the decorations from afar. And who knows, you might end up with the best-decorated house on the block!

4. Get a Christmas tree and decorate it.

Every year my dad and I go up to the mountains and cut down our Christmas tree and it is one of my favorite things to do when the holidays roll around. Doing this reminds me that Christmas is coming and I start to get in the Christmas spirit. If your family is anything like mine, you have ornaments from when you were a baby or when your parents first got their own tree together. These types of ornaments bring so much joy because you can reminisce on past memories with your family. That’s what Christmas is about, getting to spend time with family and enjoying that time. Also, how can you not be overcome with Christmas cheer while opening presents among a gorgeous and festive tree??

5. Work at a soup kitchen.

Volunteering is always a good way to spread joy, especially at a soup kitchen. Working at a soup kitchen helps bring Christmas cheer to people who could probably use it a little more than us! It’s important to let these people know that they aren’t alone and there are plenty of people who care about them too. Your presence alone will help spread some holiday cheer to those less fortunate.

6. Give to Operation Christmas Child or Toys for Tot.

Christmas over the years has become more and more commercialized and we often forget the true meaning of the day. Toys for Tots and Operation Christmas Child are two programs that gives toys to kids whose family don’t have enough money to provide gifts for them. Take a moment to go out and purchase a few toys for these children; a selfless act that is a guaranteed way to spread cheer to hundreds of children!

8. Donate change to the Salvation Army.

This is such a simple way to spread cheer. We constantly see those red buckets and the people with the bells, so why not stop and donate some change. You don’t have to donate your entire life savings, just the change in your pocket will do. By donating money, you are helping those who are less fortunate, and every cent counts!

9. Donate food.

Food is also something we take for granted during the holidays. We always think that there is going to be delicious food present at dinner, and that we are going to eat till our fat pants are too tight. Some people can’t even afford to have a turkey at dinner. Some people are too poor to afford any dinner at all. Food donations are a great way to spread some holiday cheer!

10. Give to the Armed Forces.

During the holidays, it is nice to say what we are thankful for, and I don’t know about you, but I am thankful for my freedom. We wouldn’t have our freedom if it wasn’t for the armed forces. Their jobs are 24/7 and often they are unable to spend the holidays with their families back home, so why not bring some Christmas cheer overseas. Send cards, care packages, gifts, whatever. These men and women are defending our freedom and they deserve a little Christmas cheer!
