10 Things To NOT Do at Ohio University Orientation

College orientation can be an overwhelming but exciting experience! Here are some things that shouldn't do at Ohio University orientation!

You are almost all set for Ohio University orientation. You put down the deposit. Check! Chose a meal plan. Check! Found a roommate. Check! Picked out your dorm room. Check! We have all been waiting to say goodbye to high school and hello to college, but it is important to remember that there may be a few more things you must accomplish before the big move in date. The big focus for you right now should be orientation. Registration is open until June 23rd and once you pick your dates, you’re all set! Everyone will be trying to find friends, so you must be on your best behavior. But don’t worry! We at SOCIETY19 have made a list of what NOT to do at Ohio University orientation– at all costs.

1. Wear too much Ohio U apparel.

A cute t-shirt or hat will be fine, but coming decked out in OU underwear, face paint, and green hair may be a bit much.

2. Ignore your future or temporarily assigned roommate the whole time.

If you and your roommate are going to the same orientation, don’t be that awkward pair that pretends like you don’t see each other when you BOTH clearly do. Get comfortable with each other since you’ll be living together very soon. If you are paired with a random roommate just for orientation, don’t be rude to them either. Even if it seems like you two aren’t that similar, you never know if you will see them in a future class, etc.

3. Not come prepared.

If you go to the BSO site, you will find all the information of what you need upon your arrival, along with all you need to know about the logistics of orientation.

4. Act too shy.

Come out of your shell and relax! Making prospective friends for the upcoming year is the goal of these next two days. Everyone is in the same position as you, so stop worrying, be yourself, be kind, and have fun!

5. Not care about your appearance.

Not to stress you out- but it is important to look your best for these two days. First impressions always last and looking your best is key. Even if you don’t want to dress nice, you might as well at least smell nice! Make sure you are fresh and clean, your hair brushed, etc. If you look clean, you’ll feel confident!

6. Act too conservative or hold back when meeting new people.

Talk to anyone and everyone that you can! Don’t hold back and act too reserved. Speaking your mind so everyone knows what your plans are for this upcoming year will help you make friends that enjoy and intend to participate in the same activities you are thinking of.

7. Only stay around your friends or people you already know the entire time.

Branch out and meet new people! Do we have to say it again?!

8. Always take the “easy” way out.

When scheduling your classes, sign up for a few that may be a bit challenging for you. Don’t overwhelm yourself, but easy classes can get boring.

9. Arrive late.

You will probably be nervous for your orientation, so being late would just add on to that stress. Try to arrive at least 15 minutes before the suggested time so you have enough time to get settled and to find where you are supposed to be.

10. Not pay attention or not take it seriously.

Pay attention! Orientation teaches you a lot of useful information. This information is essential to your survival at Ohio U, so why waste your time and not pay attention?
