10 Things Every Senior Needs To Do Before Graduation

When you’re a freshman starting college, senior year seems ages away and you feel like you have all the time in the world. But once you become a senior, you look back and wonder how it happened so fast! All of a sudden it’s half way through the year and you realize that you have so many things to do… but don’t panic! Here are 10 things every senior needs to do before graduation.

1. Make sure you are academically prepared to graduate.

Talk with your advisor; especially if it has been a while, to make sure you are, in fact, on track to graduate. It would be very unfortunate to find out you missed a General Education requirement or a mandatory course and have to stick around for an extra semester.

2. Order your cap, gown and stole.

If you haven’t gotten a billion emails from your college yet, reminding you to order them, get ready. It’s almost graduation time, and you’re going to need your tassels.

3. Update your resume.

You are going to need to update your resume from “currently attending” to “received a Bachelor’s degree’s from __________.” Now you can brag and name-drop for being an alum of your institution.

4. Start applying for jobs/internships.

Now that you’ve updated your resume, this is the opportune time to start applying for post-grad jobs and internships. Whether its Goldman Sachs, or the yogurt place at the mall, you should get out into the workforce and start making some money.

5. Decide where you want to go after college.

Whether you want to get away from home or can’t wait move back to the town you grew up in, you need to start figuring out where you want to live upon graduation. Once you’ve decided on a destination, you can begin the hunt for new apartments.

6. Get your senior pictures taken.

Along with all the graduation regalia emails, you’ve probably already started receiving senior picture emails from your school. This is your chance to see how much you’ve grown from your first ID picture as a freshman. Put on a big smile and say “cheese,” you’ve earned it!

7. Put in your diploma request.

Your school may have a special system where you have to put in a request for a diploma (probably one of the most important items on this list). That bright and shiny diploma is going to open doors, so don’t forget to order one.

8. Get your grad school application finished.

You may be applying to grad school, and the little winter break you get in between semesters is a great time to complete your application. Sign up for your GMAT, GRE, MCAT, or LSAT and write that personal statement. You are that much closer to being where you want to be.

9. Start saving money.

You might have student loans to repay or have a car that you’ve been eyeing since freshman year. Now that you’re halfway through senior year, it’s probably a good time to start saving up some extra cash.

10. Plan the ultimate spring break.

The last 3 summers in PCB or South Padre have been great, but this will most likely be your last spring break ever, so you might as well go all out. Years of work and little time off are in the near future; this is your last real chance to act wild. Carpe diem. Seize the break…and begin planning now!
