Will Facebook’s New Dating Feature Rival Bumble And Tinder?

Facebook has been in the news quite a bit lately, and not for good reasons. This newest announcement takes a bit of a different direction though. Facebook announced a new dating feature during the keynote address of their annual F8 developer conference on Tuesday, May 1st, 2018. So the question is, will Facebook’s new dating feature rival Bumble and Tinder?

How it will work

Facebook users will have the option to create a dating profile within their Facebook account. Fear not though, your friends will not be able to see it. The feature will match users with others they are not already friends with. This will aim towards cultivating long-term relationships rather than hookups.

Note: This feature will not be available to users whose relationship status is “married” or “in a relationship.”

 

 

Connecting users

Once you’ve completed your profile, you will be able to browse local events and groups based on your interests. Within that, you’ll have the ability to “unlock” these events and groups which will allow you to view other users who have also unlocked the pages and vice versa. Facebook will showcase other users photos and some basic information about them. If you are both interested, you’ll be able to have a conversation in a messaging box separate from Messenger and Whatsapp.

This feature will connect with events and groups on a larger scale, which will allow participating users to connect through common interests. “It mirrors the way people actually date, which is usually at events and institutions that they’re connected to,” stated Chief Product Officer Chris Cox during the F8 conference. Potential matches will be recommended based on a variety of information, including your dating preferences, things in common and mutual friends.

When to expect it

They have not announced an exact release date, but this feature will start testing later this year.

So many dating platforms already connect to your Facebook account to build your profile, i.e Tinder, Bumble, Match etc. Why not cut out the middleman?
