Why Skincare Matters More Than Makeup

When it comes to making decisions about spending money on beauty, we would rather splurge on the latest makeup products rather than investing in skincare. However, shifting the focus from makeup to skincare might be the smarter choice in the long run.

Great skin enhances your makeup.

Many factors can come into play when trying to figure out the cause for cake-y, textured foundation. It may be due to the application tool you used or even the consistency of the foundation itself, but the real culprit might be the dryness of your skin. Foundation can only do so much to cover up your unwanted spots and blemishes, but it can’t really do much about texture. By focusing on improving the quality of your skin, foundation will start to look dewy and smooth while also evening out skin tone. Who knows, you might start to not even need foundation at all!

Skincare can save you money in the long run.

Adding on to the point above, by being confident in your natural bare skin, you wouldn’t need to spend so much money buying multiple bottles of that same foundation. Granted, skincare doesn’t come cheap. Sometimes bottles of certain products can cost upwards of a hundred bucks. However, there are some great affordable skincare products out there too! With a bit of research and trial and error, you’ll be one step closer to finding your holy-grail moisturizer, toner, or cleanser (which is all essential to getting your skincare routine started!). Once you find the product(s) that work for your unique skin type, you’ll see the amazing results are worth all that hard work.

You can learn about all the different types of skincare used all over the world.

If you haven’t already been curious about K-beauty, now’s the time to get thinking, because it’s taking over the beauty community! K-beauty, or Korean beauty, seems to consist mostly of skincare rather than makeup because of the emphasis Koreans place on having flawless skin. Many Koreans are known for having “glass skin,” which is the term described for the dewy, clear, and smooth appearance of their face. This is usually achieved with a six-or-more-step daily skincare routine, which seems like a lot at the beginning, but proven to be worth it. Most of the products used in very extensive skincare routines can be unique and luxurious, such as using face masks with 24 Karat gold in them!

Improved skin can lead to confidence.

Most women use makeup to enhance their already beautiful, natural features, but a good amount also use makeup as a way to “cover-up” the things they don’t like about themselves. Instead of continuously aiming to covering up your imperfections, focusing on skincare and improving the quality of your skin can lead to improved confidence in what you look like without all the enhanced features caused by makeup.  The results you see over time is very satisfying, and it can help build that confidence that was always inside of you. While makeup is definitely fun to use and an amazing way to express creativity, it shouldn’t turn into an everyday chore or an intentional mask for insecurities to hide behind.

Skincare and makeup go hand-in-hand, as skincare can even improve makeup application but it doesn’t work the other way around. Just like Glossier’s famous motto states, I’m a firm believer in “skincare first, makeup second.” While the process of finding the right products that work with your skin can be difficult, the results of your journey will prove to be worth it. By focusing on skincare rather than makeup, you can slowly but surely build confidence in what you look like with a bare-face, otherwise known as your purest, most natural form.
