What Exactly Happens During Sorority Recruitment At The University Of Utah

Labor Day is not just some typical holiday here at the University of Utah – it is also known as Rush Weekend! That’s right, hundreds of girls all meeting up in the University Union, finding their niche, does that sound like your crowd? If you compare the different crowds that come into recruitment here in Utah, some girls have the belief about how sororities are just parties and social events, while the other gals are nonstop talking about the sisterhood they want, the philanthropy, and just the lifelong opportunities being in a sorority has to offer! Here is a play-by-play schedule of how sorority recruitment at The University of Utah is done.

Day 1: Panhellenic Day

This is known to be the exhausting and killer day of the weekend. You get to meet your recruitment counselors, along with your rush group. These are the girls you visit the different houses with on your first day so you are able to meet girls in the same position as you are. As a group, you visit all of the six houses Utah has to offer; we have Delta Gamma, Alpha Chi Omega, Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, Pi Beta Phi, and Kappa Kappa Gamma.

When you visit each house, they sing their loud, but cute song or skit as they welcome you into their house. After their introduction, tons of different girls are running up to you, wanting to know more about you! The process can be a little overwhelming, but at the end of the day, you ultimately decide which houses made you want to come back. Since we only have six sororities, you pref your top four houses and drop your bottom two.

Day 2: Chapter Pride and Philanthropy Day

The second day of recruitment is always a shocker for most girls as they come back with excitement only to find out they got called back or dropped from their favorite or not-so-favorite houses. However, as girls meet back within their recruitment groups and counselors to discuss thoughts and concerns, they are told to keep an open mind and to trust the system. Girls, today, are encouraged to ask each house that they got invited back to to ask about their philanthropy and their values as a sorority and how it affects their sisterhood. After this treasured day, girls go back and choose their top two houses that they visited.

Day 3: Preference Night

This day of Rush Weekend really takes the cake! By now, girls have narrowed down their top two houses that they are passionate to join. The attire for today is formal – your best dress is a must for this step to sorority recruitment at The University of Utah. Girls go back to the houses to connect with their choices on a more personal level – and often get served dinner by that house. Some girls will end up sharing their experience with their sorority and how their sisterhood has changed their life. WARNING: Pref night in Utah is known to get emotional so do not forget your tissues! At the end of the night, girls choose their top preference and hope for the best.

Day 4: Bid Day!

It is the day everyone has been waiting for – Bid Day! The final step of sorority recruitment at The University of Utah. You finally made it to the end; and you just cannot wait to find your new home. Girls here in Utah will meet again in the Union only to find an envelope on their chair secreting a formal bid to join their new sorority! Once you open your bid, you will find your new pledge class and you will all meet your new family! Your new sorority greets you with signs, balloons, gift bags, etc. for you and your new sisters. You eventually go into your new house and do the planned activity your sorority plans. Aren’t you glad Rush Weekend is over?

Recruitment is an extremely long and draining process, but it is also very fun and memorable. Joining a sorority can be life-changing, so also keep in mind about choosing what is right for you. Even if you are unsure, you should still give it a try! Who knows, maybe you will end up loving it and realizing how awesome of a decision you made about deciding to rush.
