What is modern fashion better known for? Stealing styles from “vintage” decades.

From bucket hats, overalls, wide-leg jeans, classic stripe tops, over-sized clothes, bold patterns and vibrant colours, you’d have to be totally insane to replicate these styles, right?

Nope. They’re back (cue creepy, little girl Poltergiest voice).

And no matter how you feel about them, it’s high time that we embrace what we’re given, especially when it can look so cute.

But with a huge boom of styles from all sorts of different decades, especially the 70s and 90s, there has to be some way to wear these vintage styles without looking like you’re in a crazy costume or just stepped out of a Gwen Stefani music video, right? Absolutely. Don’t worry, we’ve got your back. Here’s some vintage styles to try this summer, with a bit of tips and tricks.

Bold Patterns

Colourful chain prints from Versace and crazy floral and acid-trippy patterns ruled both the 90s and the 70s, respectively, and they did it with huge popularity. Some say that all of the mixing patterns and colours might clash, but mixing these styles with bold, more modern patterns gives them an effortless chic look that you can’t beat. You can also try these bold styles with a more monochromatic look if you’re not feeling that adventurous, or try neutral coloured accessories like a bucket hat (if you’re into that).

Denim Anything

Denim is the one thing that will never truly go out of style, no matter the shape it’s fit to. The looks you’ve been seeing on the runway lately that shriek 70s? They’ve just been subtly there the whole time. You just haven’t noticed until they came back full-swing. Match a wide leg pair of jeans with a cute little floral top, or an A-line, button-up denim skirt with a one piece. Or try the classic 70s denim tops (bustier anyone?) for an extra flavour to some black jeans to turn some heads. No one will complain.

Metallics are a little more for going out, right? Wrong. You can totally pair a great metallic look with any netural piece of clothing for a great day to night style. Try and rock some different textures and shades like they did in the 70s (we see you, disco styles) for more of an outfit boost or wear a slinky, silk metallic dress for a more 90s, Rachel from Friends vibe.

Vibrant Colours

If there’s anything that the 70s and 90s have in common, it’s vibrant colours. You can’t go anywhere without seeing bright, sunny yellows, or deep, beautifully stunning greens. But how do you wear these colours without looking like you just stepped out of a kid’s cartoon? Easy. Pair a bright top with darker jeans — something dark blue or black to polarize the colour. Or try to go a little more light and neutral with an acid wash skirt or shorts (you can even add in an A-line skirt style if you’re feeling really like Jackie from That 70s Show). Lastly, but certainly not least, this is a style that’s been seriously popping out from both decades and seems to be in every store. Don’t get us wrong, it’s not like there haven’t always been cropped tee options. But there’s a certain difference when it comes to the wave-like ruffles from the 90s on the edge of cropped tees, or the bold, stripe coloured baby tees that are so classic to the 70s that you’ll sometimes look like the kid from E.T.
