1. Take a selfie with Testudo.

Honestly, this is one of the first things that you should do as soon as you finish orientation. Bonus points if you do it as a prospective student. There are multiple Testudos around the UMD campus, the most prominent being the one gracing the entrance to McKeldin Library. That being said, get creative and see if you can find and get a selfie with all of the other Testudos.

2. Wade in the ODK fountain.

The ODK fountain is the centerpiece of the mall. When the summer heat rolls around, you’ll be naturally drawn to the fountain. Don’t be afraid to take a dip.

3. Enjoy the sun in Byrd Beach.

Byrd stadium can be seen towering over North Campus dorms. It’s one of the centers of student pride and is a place where we can show our BIG 10 spirit. Its been tradition since the ‘50s to hold Byrd Beach Day before finals week during the spring semester. On this day, students can sit, enjoy the sun, and even get a tan in the stadium. Its all part of the effort to help students release stress. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to become part of this Terrapin tradition!

4. Sit in the student section.

What better way to watch a game than in the student section decked out in red, gold, and black? UMD is known for having one of the most spirited student sections. This is your chance to pass the Maryland flag overhead or participate in a flash mob!

5. Enjoy Art Attack.

One of the biggest events of the year, Art Attack is held in the spring semester and is organized by SEE, or Student Entertainment Events. This organization of students, complete with branches like marketing, tech, and security, just to name a few, work all year to bring Art Attack to the UMD audience. The main event, a concert featuring popular artists, is precluded by carnival-type activities on McKeldin Mall during the day. In the past there have been artists like Jessie J, The Chainsmokers, Big Sean, and Wale. It has a huge turnout every year and students even get discounted tickets!

6. Find the secret book at the Memorial Chapel.

Memorial Chapel’s garden is probably one of the most overlooked sceneries on campus. Taking a walk through this serene garden will get your mind off of even the most nagging thoughts. Although the garden itself is extremely breathtaking, there is one other thing that you should definitely check out, if you’re lucky enough to find it that is. Under a certain bench there is a hidden compartment with a book inside. This book is open to all students to leave notes.

Reading the handwritten letters really connects you with other students in a way that we don’t often get to do anymore. Although you’ve never met them in real life, you share this moment and it reminds you that we’re all going through the same thing. Students write about their life on campus, or tell stories of how they met their true love or best friend. Its truly an experience you won’t want to miss!
