By Courtesy of Vogue, I happily sifted through their most recent sources of trends 2018, particularly in fashion that the year has brought to our attention. Apparently, ‘there’s no better occasion to rethink your wardrobe than the beginning of a new year — a time to relegate sartorial mishaps to the past, and embrace the best the new collections have to offer’. But what will — and should — you decide to wear? If the Spring/Summer 2018 runways offer any kind of indication, it’s looking to be the year of the all or nothing. Dramatic no? It’s time to either mix everything, from texture, print and fashion personalities, or come out strong matching entirely from head-to-toe. From statement cover-ups illusions to statement earrings, bum bags to gym kitsch galore, here are the 10 10 fashion trends set to define 2018 set to define 2018.
Forget sweatpants and hoodies for trends 2018. In this post-athleisure world, why not opt for some icing-blue satin boxing shorts and clunky sneakers, courtesy of Louis Vuitton? Or perhaps you’re bored with yoga pants and leggings. Why not some lycra cycling shorts, spun onto the runway at Fenty x Puma, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior and Off-White alike. Casually style them with Vetements x Umbro track top or a Gucci shell suit to channel your inner Princess Di at the gym.
When it comes to earrings, more is more: the bigger, the stranger, the better in trends 2018. Swing from Burberry’s chandelier styles, to Valentino’s disco-balls. Chanel’s jumbo icicles will surely put a finishing touch on your Instagram selfie. If your ears aren’t pierced, don’t fret. Queen Bee herself is a fan of Alessandra Rich’s clip-on, collarbone-grazing collection of diamante drop earrings.
Miniscule at Saint Laurent, massive at Marc Jacobs or in matelassé at Miu Miu, the bum bag — fanny pack, belt bag, call it what you will — is the trend to get behind for trends 2018. Kendall Jenner has her favourites, whether it’s vintage Chanel or old-school Vuitton. Take your cue from Gucci, where hips were garnished as intended – worn with princess dresses and super-smart suits – or opt for a House of Holland or Fenty x Puma athletic approach and swing yours over the shoulder. If you can’t choose, go with Valentino; its version does both at once.
New year, new you. And there’s no better way to show the world that you’re on top of it than corresponding colours. Like a sartorial stationery set, Versace print or colourblocked nearly everything for spring: from sharp-shouldered citrus-shade trouser suits to leopard skirt suits. Forget about what you learned in art class about complimentary colours and just dress in one shade all throughout. There’s no need to mix and match when you have Marc Jacobs’s hot pink megasuit or Gucci’s Lady-Penelope-meets-Bianca-Jagger hot pink jumbo suit, styled with a matching shirt and tie of course. Keep day-to-day casual with a cotton t-shirt in the mix, just like they did at Versace. But take one in every colour.
Quick essential question… have you seen Cate Blanchett in starring in Oceans 8? She donned a velvet suit to soaring standards. Just saying. Satin slinks on. Bar the goddess gowns of Versace’s supermodel finale, the lustrous fabric now comes in a sturdier silhouette. Even model-of-the-moment Kaia Gerber’s runway debut ensemble at Calvin Klein was a stiff satin Western shirt and pleated-front yellow silk trousers – part of designer Raf Simons’s horror-film-honed Americana collection. Everything is better shiny, from Gucci’s oversized satin sashes belted frock coats to Marc Jacobs’s silk turbans. Above all, trousers are the best satin statement: you can’t go wrong with the pink and pleat-fronted at Coach 1941 or flared in spearmint shades at Acne Studios. Dress down your satin best with Calvin Klein’s other seasonal must-have: a waterproof anorak.
If corresponding colours aren’t your thing, mix feelings — and prints — this spring. For inspiration, look to Stella Tennant’s opening look at Balenciaga: a striped blue banker-shirt, plaid kilt and sunset-print thigh-high boots. Try sizes of all stripes, as seen at Louis Vuitton, or mix Gucci’s horse-print dresses with leopard-print coats. Further inspiration can be had at Prada, which cuffed comic strip t-shirts with rolled-up striped shirt sleeves; Hillier Bartley, which wrapped trouser suits with fishnet body stockings; and Miu Miu, which layered glazed black lace dresses over geometric-print knits. Even easier, throw a textured baseball or varsity jacket over sequinned slip dress with ankle boots — as seen at Coach 1941 — or grunge it in army-style coat over lace dress like at Alexander Wang.
Cover it all up. Spring’s silhouette comes with a long sleeve, high neck and low hem, because showing skin is so 2017. Gucci’s head-to-toe hit was an amethyst-coloured, ankle-grazing gown — bustle-fronted with matching hood – while Alessandra Rich has already enriched Nicole Kidman’s wardrobe with a yellow rose-speckled tea dress. Keep the focus on the garments with hair tied back or braided up. Better still, opt for the buzz cut seen with golden dress at Gucci. Definitely eye-popping for trends 2018!
A new power couple — a sock and elegant heel — was spotted at Spring/Summer 2018 shows, seen everywhere from Prada to Erdem, Fendi to Preen. Burberry slouched-down a bonny argyle sock with tartan heels, while Miu Miu’s socks popped in fluorescent yellow. It’s not just for the catwalk: Kendall Jenner took a nude pop-sock and spindly stiletto straight to the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival. The sandal/sock combo is also getting a refresh with new colour combos: Try black ankle socks and golden sandals, as seen at Marc Jacobs, or white on orange, as seen at Missoni.
It’s 2018, and plaid shows no signs of checking out. Especially not after Burberry revived its signature check with a vengeance this season. Why not pick up a pair of sunny yellow trousers from Balenciaga, as seen on Rupert Bear? Or maybe pick up a gallant Prince of Wales check suit, styled with some loafers — all from Gucci, of course. For the adventurous ones amongst us, Vetements’s Victoriana smock dress, fashioned from lumberjack plaid, is the perfect statement piece for you. Whether pencil skirt or slip dress, we’ll happily take the check this year.
Last year was the year of the protest tee, and this trend just refuses to die. This year, Dior is back, this time with a Linda Nochlin quote. For the less protest-minded, there’s Gucci’s literary-chic “Never Marry a Mitford” jumper, and Louis Vuitton’s t-shirt tribute to Netflix cult series Stranger Things. Don’t just speak your passions. Broadcast them to the world. Or at least to everyone looking at you.
