The Wonders of Turmeric: Why It’s Good For You

When we think of turmeric, we usually think of Indian cuisine and lattes. But did you know that it has numerous health benefits? Recently, turmeric has gained traction and attention due to the health benefits of this spice, and it has taken on the world by storm. Read on to find out why it is good for you, and why you should try it.

1: Turmeric Is Anti-Inflammatory

One of the reasons why turmeric is good for you because it is anti-inflammatory. Turmeric contains curcumin, a chemical that not only is responsible for the bright yellow colour, but is said to contain anti-inflammatory properties. In some cases, curcumin is so potent that it can be as effective as anti-inflammatory drugs. One study actually discovered that curcumin was more effective in fighting against inflammation than aspirin and ibuprofen.

2: Can Prevent Cancer

Another reason why this spice is good for you is that it can prevent cancer. As mentioned above, curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties, but that is not the only thing it can do. Curcumin is also beneficial in treating cancer, as it affects cancer growth and development. One study has discovered that curcumin can inhibit tumor initiation and promotion, as well as inhibit metastasis and cell proliferation.

3: Supports Healthy Joints

Considering that turmeric contains curcumin, it is no surprise that the yellow spice is beneficial to the joints and can prevent them from getting swollen and inflamed. It has been discovered that curcumin is able to help with arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, to the point that it is considered to be more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs.

4: Fights Depression

Turmeric is good for you because it can also fight depression. The curcumin in turmeric boosts BDNF, a brain-builder protein and can also give a boost to levels of serotonin and dopamine, two neurotransmitters that are considered the ‘happy chemicals’ and can elevate moods.

5: Can Promote Weight Loss

Another benefit to turmeric is that it can promote weight loss. This is because curcumin can reduce inflammation that is associated with obesity. Moreover, curcumin can also help with weight loss by decreasing the secretion of stress hormones that can cause people to gain weight. A study has also shown that curcumin can help reduce weight loss in people with metabolic disorders (such as type II diabetes) who have been resistant to normal weight loss regimes.

6: Help With Respiratory System

Due to the anti-inflammatory properties it has, turmeric is able to help with respiratory problems, such as clearing away the mucus in the lungs. It can also help people suffering from asthma. This is because turmeric is able to block the release of T-lymphocytes which causes inflammation and irritation in the lungs. As a result, turmeric is able to regulate asthma attacks.

7: Can Lower Cholesterol Levels

Another reason why turmeric is beneficial for you is that it is able to lower cholesterol levels. Considered the ‘bad’ cholesterol, LDL contributes to fatty buildups in arteries. However, the curcumin in turmeric is able to lower LDL cholesterol and prevent its oxidation, which suppresses the fatty buildups in arteries. Furthermore, it is able to prevent cholesterol production in the liver and block cholesterol production in the gut as well.

8: Encourages Skin Nourishment

Turmeric is good for you because it can promote healthy-looking skin. This is because this spice is an antioxidant, which helps repair damaged-looking skin. Moreover, the anti-inflammatory properties also help with premature ageing. A study has discovered that turmeric has been able to improve skin conditions, such as acne, atopic dermatitis and facial photoaging.
