The 10 Effects Of Meditation On The Mind

Meditation has somewhat become a trend that has quickly arisen in everyone’s lives. If it’s that you know somebody who meditates, you are a meditator yourself or you have once been advised to “just give it a go.” From the growing attention meditation has had over the past few years, researchers have dived into looking into how it actually helps our minds, and why this hype is actually beneficial for us. Here are 10 effects of meditation on the mind.

1. Reconnecting our senses

Meditation can seem a little like a con, and there is speculation it doesn’t actually benefit us whatsoever. However, there has been evidence meditation helps improve some of our senses; sight, smell, hear and taste, and who wouldn’t want even better taste? Meditation helps us reach a space of contentment, a spacial awareness utopia where we can reconnect with our bodies and embrace, capture and consume the environment around us. Huummmmmm.

2. Anti-aging

Commence the whole world to meditate. Reducing stress and anxiety has proven to reduce the natural aging cycle of not only our brain but our bodies. It helps improve our blood circulation, reduces tension and even encourages antibody cells to mutate. Who knows, one day everyone may be immortal! The effects of meditation are quite beneficial.

3. Helps anxiety and depression

Anxiety and depression affect more people than we probably think! Meditation is a great way to calm your mind and bring back the power to yourself. It affects our brain region where our thoughts are targeted towards “me”, allowing full attention to yourself and your own subconscious and conscious thoughts. Anyone else mind-blown?

4. Concentration and attentiveness

Being sat in a space of full awareness creates better concentration. Being in utter silence thinking about nothing other than yourself and your current surroundings settles our busy minds and brings us to a healthy and balanced wavelength. Relaxing not only our brain but our bodies means we can make room for improved focus and attentiveness – perfect for us leading a hectic life!

5. Lunch-break for your mind

If you are a ‘get-up-and-go’ sort of person (good on you) and find it difficult or even impossible to take-a-break, meditation is a great way for having a quick lunch break for your mind. Yes, of course, it is great to have the energy to work, work, work, but every healthy mind needs that me-time break. Try set out a time of your day – best in the early morning or late at night – to sit and meditate or visit a meditation class.

6. Encourages a healthier life

Mindset is everything. Being in the right mindset brings so many benefits. Trust me. To eat healthy, to want to workout, to be more sociable and to get that promotion or first at uni, you need to be in the best mindset possible. Meditation has been proved by scientists and researchers to help inspire a better and healthier lifestyle. We all know how hard it can be to kick-start that lent-promise, new years resolution, or that sin we’ve been meaning to ditch for months. Meditation allows our mind to be calm, inspired and so so much healthier. Win Win.

7. Happy, happy happy!

We can’t all count on The Office, adorable puppy pictures or Chinese takeaways to keep us happy. Meditation is a great way to induce happiness, plus it’s cheap and guilt free! According to Doctor Ronnie Newman “Meditation puts you on the fast track to being happy.” The effects of meditation are numerous.

8. You can do it anywhere convenient for you!

The best thing about meditation is it can be done wherever and whenever. So for those of us who have busy schedules, or no time to pop to the gym for a meditation session, we can simply do it in the comfort of our homes. There are now many apps available on our phones, youtube videos and DVD’s that teach us how to meditation to the best of our ability. So we can still be that little bit lazy when we want… guilty!

9. Lowers blood pressure

Meditation encourages nitric oxide which results in the opening of blood vessels lowering blood pressure. With lower blood pressure it means less stress and a better immunity system, so say goodbye to visiting your doctor every month! A healthy mind means a healthy body and a healthy, happy life. Hallelujah!

10. Finding your zen with an at-home spa

For all fellow students and budgeteers, visiting a spa is something we all desire but our tight wallets and shallow pockets can’t cater for. Meditation allows our minds to relax and lets the stress escape from our tensed bodies. Maybe set up a bubble bath, moisturise your body, light some candles and have a meditation evening before a good night sleep! Who needs 5-star spa’s?
